Recycled tires in railroad construction

Usually tires are much more associated with cars, trucks, airplanes rather than trains. Notwithstanding, recent technology advances found yet another successful application for used tire rubber, and this is railroad construction. Moreover, used tires increasingly become a more and more important part of improving railway systems around the world.

Railroad ties from recycled rubber

After tires end their lifecycle on vehicles, they are brought to a recycling facility and then reprocessed. One field of application of recycled tire rubber in railway construction are railroad ties. Original railroad ties are made of wood and, in recent years, plastic or concrete. However, these materials are susceptible to rot, infestation and erosion over time. As a result, this can be detrimental to the whole system of infrastructure. But when railroad ties are made of recycled rubber, they last longer and turn out to be much stronger than any other materials.

Advantages of recycled tires in railway construction

In countries which rely on railroads as the main transportation system of passengers and goods, recycled rubber ties have numerous advantages. Per mile, fewer ties can be used, as they are much stronger than any other materials. In the long term, cities and countries will be able to cut down their maintenance expenses, as they won’t need to replace railroad ties often.

Other railroad applications of used tires.

Apart of railroad ties, today’s technology discovered yet another application of used tires which can support railroad infrastructure. For instance, in 2013 Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in United States announced that 13,000 tons of recycled tires were used in the creation of an extension of the railway to Fremont, California.

A very disadvantageous factor for local communities as well as for the railroad infrastructure itself is high vibration and noise. In BART’s new railroad, recycled tires were used as a method to reduce vibration caused by the railway system for surrounding houses and buildings. BART chose this method of using tire-derived aggregate because it’s the most environmentally friendly, but it also makes for easier transportation because it’s lighter than other traditional material like gravel.

Using rubber railroad ties and shredded used tires for noise reduction and strengthening railway infrastructure is just one example of numerous recycled rubber applications. After recycling, used tires serve a wide range of industries worldwide with reliable, durable, resilient and long-lasting material helping save money on maintenance and give products additional properties.
