The initiative is of the Cyprus Environment Commissioner Ioanna Panayiotou and attempts to clean up the area of the huge piles of used tires, which are littering it.Ιωάννα Παναγιώτου

Over the past fifteen years tons of tires have been left to pile up in landfills, which lie in-between industrial, commercial and residential areas within the territory of the Ypsonas municipality.

On Friday the Office of the Environment Commissioner issued a press release calling for volunteers to join the clearing of the area. The announcement also noted that burning the tires would release extremely harmful gases into the atmosphere.

Recognizing that these tires were placed in the area before the creation of the current comprehensive system of tire collection and management, and also being aware of the negative effects on the environment and public health the Office has undertaken the initiative of cleaning the area with the help of volunteers.

The effort is supported by the municipalities of Ypsonas and Ayios Athanassios, the Department of Environment, Public Works, the Vasiliko Cement Company, RTM Tyres Recycling Ltd, E4C LTD, MS (Skyra) Vasas Ltd, A. Tsouloftas & Sons Ltd, and the Limassol cycling club.
