According to recent messages from SIGNUS – a Spanish end-of-life tire authority – when NEX Tires reach the end of their usable life, SIGNUS will take care of their further fate. When the tires NEX sells reach the end of their useful lives, the tire distributor NEX Tires has partnered with SIGNUS Ecovalor to manage the environment.

SIGNUS is the major Spanish EPR program for end-of-life tires, which, in 2020 alone, managed 150,228 tons of end-of-life tires helping turn them into new useful products for different applications. The organization recently announced an adjustment to the structure of tire categories in its pricing table to adapt to the economic demands of the industry. SIGNUS has announced a 3.4% reduction in the Ecovalor tire management fees for 2025, reflecting adjustments to the average weight of tires and decreased management costs. The update was revealed during a press meeting where SIGNUS reviewed its 2024 accomplishments and outlined upcoming initiatives for 2025.

In addition to the new Register of Producers, the most notable developments are the regulation of the classification and sale of second-hand tires and the incorporation of tires with a diameter greater than 1,400 mm into the expanded responsibility of the producer, which are added to the new structure rates. According to Signus, these tires are distinguished because in their nomenclature the letter S is added to the category to which it belongs (For example F1S) and they have their own Ecovalor amounts.

SIGNUS – the Spanish end-of-life tire management authority – registered for the first time with the Spanish Office of Climate Change the Carbon Footprint generated by its activities in 2017. It became the first extended producer responsibility collective system to do so in a verified and certified manner by AENOR. The Carbon Footprint Registry is voluntary and collects the efforts of Spanish companies, administrations, and other organizations in calculating, reducing, and offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions generated by their activities.

SIGNUS first registered its carbon footprint with the Spanish Climate Change Office in 2017, becoming the first verified and certified collective management system to do so, with certification by AENOR. This project was launched with the aim of seeking ways to improve the environmental management of end-of-life tires. This involves not only finding more applications for the resulting byproducts but also engaging all stakeholders involved in the various management operations to advance their energy efficiency.

Signus Ecovalor engages in eco-friendly tire recycling by converting ELT textile fibers into BHET using high-temperature, high-pressure ethylene glycol. Yet, efficiency faces challenges when contaminants like rubber are present. Pure PET textiles achieve an 85% efficiency, while contaminated tire textiles reach only 20-30%.

SIGNUS and AIMPLAS have completed the first phase of the GREENFU project, which aims to develop composite materials using recycled rubber from end-of-life tires (ELTs) combined with thermoplastics. The project focuses on creating sustainable solutions for industries such as automotive and construction, leveraging the properties of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs).
