Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) that constantly searches applications for scrap tires now serves as a member of the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG) – an important informational body with connections to the rubber industry and international governmental authorities. IRSG currently comprises over 100 members from 36 countries. The group is involved in discussion of the matters influencing natural and synthetic rubbers, according to IRSG Secretary-General Salvatore Pinizzotto who welcomed TSA into his association.

This September, Robert Weibold attended the First International Cooperation Summit on Tire and Rubber Recycling in Kunshan, China, on 16 and 17 September 2019. The event gathered industry participants from all over China, as well as from the European Union, the United States and other countries. Proclaimed by Zhu Jun, the president of China’s Tire Recycling Association (CTRA), the motto of the summit was “Environment first, Resources second; no mercy to polluting technologies”. As he and many other speakers asserted, China had gone a huge transformation in the tire recycling industry over the last 10 years.

The International Tire Exhibition and Conference in Ohio (United States) will focus on bio and recycled materials and their potential to be used as substitute to virgin natural and synthetic rubber. The exhibition and conference will be held on September 24-26, 2019 in Akron, Ohio. Sheraton Suites Akron Cuyahoga Falls will serve as a venue for the event that will unite tire industry specialists and will become a great place for productive networking.

A global producer of synthetic rubber Trinseo believes that styrene which can be processed out of plastic waste can be reused in tire manufacturing; however, it is still unclear how the industry could switch from a linear production reaching a more sustainable approach like circular economy. This concern was voiced by Trinseo’s tech and innovation director Sandra Hofmann during Future Tire Conference 2019 in Germany’s Cologne earlier this month. She explained that currently there is an access to a stream of recycled styrene that could be used in packaging, or, alternatively, be upcycled in tires and SSBR (solution-styrene butadiene rubber).

The Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC) claims that the growth was driven by the recovery in crude oil prices, mid-term supply concerns, new expectations of a faster-paced global economic recovery led by the U.S. All these factors improve outlook for natural rubber demand. According to a statement from ANRPC the crude oil price recovery impact was caused by OPEC’s deal on the 30th of November 2016, which stipulates cut in output by 1.2 million barrels per day during the 1st half of 2017.

By mid-May all price-gains made earlier in the second quarter in the Natural Rubber markets, have been completely diminished. Since then some significant hikes have been recorded in Thailand, Japan, China and Malaysia. However, in overall markets are still far behind the peaks reached in April, which suggests that the attempt by the producer-country to rebalance the market is losing strength.
