The municipality of Centro in Tabasco, Mexico, has removed 1,669.65 tonnes of waste tires since 2022 as part of a coordinated public health and environmental campaign against dengue, Zika and chikungunya. The results were presented during an ordinary session of the Municipal Health Committee, where local authorities reviewed progress, prevention strategies and the epidemiological situation in the municipality. According to the report, all collected tire material has been sent for ecological processing to Geocycle, allowing the municipality to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites while giving the recovered material a controlled treatment route. The initiative shows how waste tire collection, public health policy and tire recycling can work together to reduce disease-vector risks and improve local environmental management.

Five-year effort targets mosquito breeding sites

The waste tire removal program has been carried out through uninterrupted coordination between the Centro municipal government and the local health jurisdiction. Authorities said discarded tires can become breeding sites for mosquitoes that transmit dengue, Zika and chikungunya, especially when they collect standing water.

The municipality said the program has helped expand the protected territory in Centro by removing tire accumulations that could otherwise contribute to vector proliferation. The effort forms part of broader prevention work led by municipal health authorities.

All collected tires sent to Geocycle

According to the municipal report, 100% of the collected tire material has been sent to Geocycle for ecological processing. This provides an authorized destination for the waste tires and helps remove the source of potential mosquito breeding from communities.

For local tire recycling and recovery systems, cooperation with downstream processors is essential. It ensures that tires collected during public health campaigns are not simply moved from one unmanaged site to another, but are directed into controlled treatment and recovery channels.

COMUNSA reviews health and prevention progress

The results were presented during a session of the Comité Municipal de Salud, known as COMUNSA. The meeting, headed by the Municipal Health Coordination, reviewed progress in tire removal, prevention strategies and the local epidemiological outlook.

Authorities said the outcome reflects sustained work by the municipal government under President Yolanda Osuna Huerta to strengthen prevention and reduce environmental conditions that favor mosquito-borne diseases.

Public urged to keep yards clean

The Government of Centro renewed its call for residents to keep patios clean and remove discarded objects that can collect water. The municipality emphasized the prevention message that without mosquitoes there is no dengue.

Waste tire collection is one part of this prevention strategy. Other discarded containers and bulky waste can also create breeding conditions, making community participation important for reducing disease risk.

Campaign links tire recovery with environmental management

The removal of nearly 1,670 tonnes of waste tires demonstrates the environmental relevance of organized tire collection programs. Tires are bulky, slow to degrade and difficult to manage when abandoned in open areas, while also creating public health risks in regions exposed to mosquito-borne disease.
