Modern Meadow, a pioneer in bio-design, has partnered with Mercedes-Benz AG to develop a sustainable leather alternative for the CONCEPT AMG GT XX. Using Modern Meadow’s INNOVERA™, the collaboration aims to set new interior standards for future vehicles. The innovative material combines plant-based proteins, biopolymers, and chemically recycled AMG GT3 racing tires, aligning with the mass balance approach.

INNOVERA™ mimics the feel and performance of traditional leather while remaining completely animal-free. It offers flexibility in textures—ranging from suede to full grain—and colors, delivering high design freedom. “We have used INNOVERA™ to create a new luxury leather alternative without sacrificing aesthetics, versatility and texture,” said David Williamson, CEO of Modern Meadow.

The material contains over 80% renewable carbon content, is breathable, waterproof, and lighter than traditional materials. Its tensile strength is twice as high, enhancing durability. In the CONCEPT AMG GT XX, one scrap tire yields about four square meters of the material, which covers the seat pads in a Nappa-look finish, emphasizing the performance aesthetic.

INNOVERA™ is also compatible with standard manufacturing processes, reducing logistical challenges and expanding use across various industries including fashion, footwear, and furniture. With this breakthrough, Modern Meadow and Mercedes-Benz are redefining luxury with sustainability at its core.
