TNU (Tratamiento Neumáticos Usados) – a Spanish EPR agency for end-of-life tires – explains with its new informative campaign "Did you know that...?" the wide and innovative applications offered by the recycling of end-of-life tires.

The recent TNU’s article emphasizes the importance of collecting and recycling used tires instead of leaving them in nature, as they take 1,000 years to decompose. The most environmentally friendly option is to reuse the tires for manufacturing new ones. If that is not possible, recycling plants extract and separate the different components of the tires, such as rubber, textile fiber, and steel, for recovery and repurposing.

The recycled rubber from end-of-life tires finds applications in various industries, including construction, sports, agriculture, livestock, decoration, and infrastructure. Technological advancements enable the use of crushed, granulated, or powdered rubber in numerous eco-friendly products, offering environmental and economic advantages.

As an example, TNU mentions the use of rubber powder from recycled tires in the production of ecological rugby balls, where 80% is recycled tire rubber and 20% is natural rubber. By manufacturing 21 rugby balls from one end-of-life tire, significant amounts of CO2 emissions, oil, and water can be saved.

TNU emphasizes the importance of reusing tire components to move towards a sustainable future, considering the current climate crisis and the scarcity of raw materials. Through their campaign, TNU aims to promote the ecological, economic, and social benefits of giving end-of-life tires a second life and spreading awareness about the opportunities offered by the recovery and recycling of valuable tire materials.
