Swedish environmental company Ragn-Sells and Norwegian technology developer Inrigo are launching a joint venture focused on recovering raw materials from end-of-life tires, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil resources in manufacturing. Leveraging advanced pyrolysis technology, the initiative can break down rubber in end-of-life tires, creating raw materials that tire producers can use as an alternative to virgin oil and for applications such as asphalt.

“Using recycled materials is essential for a sustainable society. Our new technology will enable tire manufacturers to replace virgin resources with recycled alternatives, helping lower emissions,” said Pål Hansen, CEO of Ragn-Sells Dekkgjenvinning AS. Ragn-Sells has pledged to cut carbon emissions by two million tonnes by 2030, and this initiative is a key step in achieving that goal.

The venture addresses a significant waste challenge in Sweden and Norway, where about 140,000 tonnes of tires are collected yearly and often incinerated for energy in cement production. By developing a circular alternative, the project could mitigate large-scale emissions.

Supported by a grant from Innovasjon Norge, the project is currently in its pilot phase, with plans for expansion next year.
