TRWP are generated during normal tire use as tires interact with road surfaces. Understanding how these particles move through the environment has become an area of growing scientific and regulatory interest, particularly as attention increases around urban runoff and water quality.

6PPD has been widely used in tire manufacturing since the late 1960s as an antioxidant and antiozonant that helps protect tires from cracking and degradation, extending service life and improving performance. However, when tire materials wear down during use, compounds released in tire and road wear particles (TRWP) can transform into 6PPD-Q through atmospheric reactions.

Titled “Pyrolysis-GC/MS calibration for environmental quantification of tire tread: Standards and marketplace averaged elastomer subunit profiles” and published in the peer-reviewed journal Chemosphere’s September 2025 volume, the study validates a Py-GC/MS protocol that now improves accuracy and reproducibility in quantifying TRWPs in soil and sediment, even when particle composition varies by either geography or tire manufacturing method.

The Tire Industry Project (TIP), a voluntary CEO-driven initiative representing ten of the largest tire manufacturers globally, has published its latest KPI report, highlighting the measurable progress in sustainability made by member companies between 2021 and 2024.

A recently published series of scientific papers is calling for action to strengthen research and harmonize methodologies for measurement and assessment of tire wear emissions. At its Board meeting of 9 November, ETRMA Members elected Chris Delaney of Goodyear as President of the Association for a two-year term of office starting on 1 January 2024. Dr Ralf Holschumacher of the German Rubber Industry Association (WDK) was elected Vice President at the meeting.
