The Mitsubishi Chemical Group (MCG Group) announced that it has launched studies to perform chemical recycling of end-of-life tires (ELTs) by utilizing the coke ovens at its Kagawa Plant (Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture). The MCG Group aims to begin marketing sustainable carbon black made from ELTs by March 2026. Along with the accelerating trend in the tire industry toward using sustainable raw materials, there is a growing need to use recycled carbon black, one of the main raw materials and a rubber reinforcing agent used in tires.

LD Carbon, a Seoul-based producer of recovered carbon black (rCB), has closed a $28 million Series C funding round led by Toyota's growth fund, Woven Capital, with participation by Meritz Securities, Investwith, Industrial Bank of Korea, Hyundai Motor Group Zer01ne, Elohim Partners and New Main Capital. LD Carbon will use the investment to scale operations to recycle end-of-life tires and materials from end-of-life vehicles into rCB and tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) through pyrolysis, which can be used to create new automotive parts and tires. Orion S.A., a global specialty chemicals company, announced today it is investing in Alpha Carbone, a French tire recycling company. The partnership will enable Alpha Carbone to scale up and produce commercial volumes of tire pyrolysis oil and recovered carbon black. The cooperation also includes a long-term supply agreement with Orion as the exclusive customer for the tire pyrolysis oil produced by Alpha Carbone. The oil will be used by Orion to manufacture circular carbon black for tire and rubber goods customers.
