Black Bear will produce 12,000 metric tons p.a. of recovered Carbon Black — a sustainable alternative that results in a reduction of over 65,000 tons of CO2 missions compared to the use of conventional Carbon Black. Black Bear and HELM seek to start production and marketing of recovered Carbon Black from the flagship plant in Chemelot Industrial Park from the 2nd half of 2023. On August 27, 2021, Black Bear Carbon B.V. (“Black Bear ”) and HELM AG (“HELM”) have announced a long-term supply chain and marketing cooperation. Black Bear will produce recovered Carbon Black from end-of-life tires via its proprietary technology. Both companies will jointly introduce this innovative product to industrial clients. Black Bear will contribute its extensive knowledge in product and application development while HELM will provide its supply chain know-how and commercial expertise through its broad market presence. This exclusive, long-term agreement covers Black Bear’s first flagship plant on the Chemelot Industrial Park in Geleen, The Netherlands, which is aimed for a start-up in the 2nd half of 2023. Both partners seek to extend their cooperation via further projects which Black Bear is planning.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) reports that its Recovered carbon black will be introduced in a customer-specific rubber compound supplied by Trelleborg Mixing Forsheda. According to Enviro, the introduction means that its recovered carbon black takes a step into a new segment and is the result of successful production tests and a long-term collaboration between the parties. Volumes and dates for future deliveries remain to be determined.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) has developed a new type of recovered carbon black with improved dispersion properties. The new type of carbon black has been developed to meet demand from the tire and rubber industry. The new type of carbon black has been produced for some time at Enviro’s plant in Åsensbruk, Sweden, and has acquired properties enhancing its interaction with other chemicals and ingredients when manufacturing tires and rubber parts, for example.

ASTM International – a standardization body introducing key definitions of products and materials with over 12,800 ASTM standards already in work worldwide – recently published their first standard relating to recovered Carbon Black (rCB). The ASTM Committee D36 on Recovered Carbon Black (rCB) was founded in 2017 to support the emerging rCB industry regarding the quality and safety of their products. Several sub-committees are responsible for developing standards for terminology, guidance, practices, and testing methods. Recovered Carbon Black, typically derived from the thermal degradation of end-of-life tires, is a relatively new, sustainable raw material product for use in rubber, plastics, and pigment applications.

Bridgestone and Michelin publish white paper to share the results of their work on the increased use of recovered carbon black in the tire industry. Following the joint call to action around recovered carbon black at the 2021 Smithers rCB conference, Bridgestone Corporation and Michelin Group have published a joint technical white paper to share the results of their work with stakeholders in the rCB community to develop a proposed global standard to increase the utilization of recovered carbon black material in tires. In a joint appeal, leading tire manufacturers Michelin and Bridgestone believe that there is the potential for an annual total market of up to 1 million tons of recovered carbon black by 2030. The appeal was made last week at the Smithers Recovered Carbon Black Conference in Berlin, which Enviro attended and where the company’s chairman, Alf Blomqvist, was one of the speakers. Both Michelin and Bridgestone have set a goal that by 2050, their tires will consist of 100% sustainable materials. At their appearance in Berlin, both companies stated that the capacity to produce recovered carbon black that meets manufacturer specifications is small compared to the total carbon black market.

Michelin and Bridgestone publicly announced their collaboration on developing the recovered carbon black on November 22 at the Smithers rCB Conference in Amsterdam. Sander Vermeulen of Michelin and Jake Ronsholt of Bridgestone took to the stage to discuss the role of pyrolysis in the tire recycling industry as well as the opportunities it presents. Vermeulen was apparent that pyrolysis had the potential to reduce the amount of fossil fuel utilized for virgin Carbon Black used in tires, but there were obstacles. Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) – a tire pyrolysis equipment manufacturer and operator based in Sweden – and its partner Michelin – one of the global leaders in tire manufacturing – have presented another sustainable racing tire based on recovered carbon black from Scandinavian Enviro Systems. The new tire is a high-performance tire developed for racing cars and was recently presented at Michelin’s Movin’On global sustainable summit. According to Enviro, the new tire contains 46 percent renewable and recovered material, including recovered carbon black delivered by Enviro to Michelin. Michelin presented the new high-performance tire mounted on the electric-hydrogen, long-distance racing car, GreenGT Mission H24. Earlier this spring, Michelin also presented a sustainable racing tire for MotoE, a racing series for electric motorcycles, which also contained recovered carbon black from Enviro. Michelin has announced the goal that all its tires will be manufactured entirely from sustainable material by 2050.
