As reported by Market Screener, Pyrolyx AG – an internationally renowned producer of recovered carbon black from end-of-life tires – recently announced that it would continue the current shut down of its recovered carbon black (rCB) manufacturing facilities in Terre Haute, Indiana and Stegelitz, Germany, which was at first announced on March 24, 2020. During the shutdown of its manufacturing facilities, Pyrolyx is reviewing operational and financial requirements to reopen facilities safely and efficiently at a later point of time.

Wastefront AS has announced a significant partnership with Weber & Schaer, one of Europe's largest distributors of rubber industry products, for the offtake and on-sale of their Recovered Carbon Black (rCB). According to Wastefront, this agreement secures a fully circular supply chain for end-of-life tires (ELTs) in the UK. The deal initially covers a minimum of 35% of rCB produced at Wastefront's Sunderland plant, with potential for future expansion. Black Bear – the Dutch tire upcycling company – has appointed Richard Dikkers as its new Commercial Director. Before joining Black Bear, Dikkers spent thirteen years at Oiltanking, most recently as Director New Business & Market Intelligence. In his new position he will support Black Bear in solving the global waste tire problem with the company’s circular economy-based business model.

Recovered carbon black producer Pyrolyx AG is ready to set a second pyrolysis facility which will be constructed in Terre Haute, US. This move comes after the company relocated its main office from German Munich to Terre Haute, Indiana. One pyrolysis plant has already been built in the US by Pyrolyx; the company says that the next facility will be very similar to the US-based tire pyrolysis plant.

On March 10, 2021, Black Bear Carbon, the innovative company that recovers carbon black, oil and gas from end-of-life tire granulate, has announced in its press release its intention to build a factory at the Chemelot industrial park in Geleen. A previous factory in Nederweert, in a joint venture with tire recycler Kargro, was dismantled after a fire in February 2019. After an intensive period of two years, Black Bear Carbon is living up to its reputation as a technology pioneer with the development of a best-in-class factory in terms of process, safety and reliability. At the end of 2019, Black Bear Carbon announced that it was going to Rotterdam and made an energetic start towards that goal in 2020. In the course of 2020, timely realization of RCBNL turned out to be difficult to achieve due to the issue regarding nitrogen deposition rights. In close collaboration with Chemelot, the BBC has looked at the alternatives and decided to settle in the south of Limburg province.

On November 22, Michelin and Bridgestone publicly announced their collaboration on developing the recovered carbon black at the Smithers rCB Conference in Amsterdam. Following the announcement, some work has been done by the companies to reach the circular goals set at the conference. Fraunhofer Institute writes that until recently, end-of-life tires have been used mainly for recovering energy sources: Only small proportions of the carbon black contained in these tires are recycled, since mineral ash accounts for around 20 percent of its content. A new process developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP is able to isolate almost all of this ash – allowing both the carbon black and the minerals from the ash to be reused.
