New consumer research commissioned by Tyre Stewardship Australia has found strong public support for national rules requiring used tires to be properly collected and recycled. The YouGov study, conducted in March 2026 among 1,051 vehicle owners, found that 91% support national rules for used tire collection and recycling, while 92% believe the tire industry should take greater responsibility. TSA said the findings strengthen the case for a whole-of-supply-chain mandatory tire product stewardship scheme covering importers, retailers, collectors, recyclers and other participants. The survey also found concerns over transparency, illegal dumping and disposal fees, with many motorists unsure what happens to their old tires after replacement. TSA said the results show that Australia’s voluntary approach is no longer enough to deliver the accountability, traceability and environmental outcomes consumers expect.

Oman Cement is expanding its alternative fuels and raw materials strategy as part of efforts to reduce production costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve the sustainability of cement manufacturing. In its Board of Directors’ report for the first half of 2026, the Muscat-based cement producer said it is strengthening the sourcing and use of alternative fuels and raw materials to increase its Thermal Substitution Rate, which measures the share of kiln thermal energy supplied by non-fossil fuel sources. The company is evaluating several options, including tire-derived fuel, recovered carbon black and oil sludge, while also continuing work with government authorities and other stakeholders on pretreatment and co-processing of municipal solid waste. The strategy could create additional outlets for end-of-life tire materials by linking tire recycling, pyrolysis outputs and cement kiln co-processing.

TSA is collaborating with Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, on an early-stage research project investigating whether end-of-life tires could be used to produce green graphite for battery and energy-related applications.

One of the milestones of the new year for AZuR is the establishment of a new, interdisciplinary project group. The fourth AZuR project group, initially consisting of 11 partners under the leadership of Martin von Wolfersdorff, aims to generate fresh ideas for the chemical recycling of used tires. Interdisciplinary AZuR project groups are intended to advance innovative recycling methods for used tires. Currently, there are already project groups focusing on retreading, material recycling of used tires, and rubberized asphalt. The composition of these groups, with partners from industry, trade, and academia, is chosen to incorporate as many relevant aspects and perspectives on a topic as possible.
