As reported by the European Rubber Journal (ERJ) this January, an Irish materials technology start-up said it had made significant progress in chemical tire recycling, unveiling a process capable of recovering up to 98 percent of materials from end-of-life tires, including rubber, recovered carbon black, steel, and textile fibers.

In the virtual information disclosure published by Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) on March 2, the company responded to questions on subjects that include the license agreement with Michelin. In the information disclosure, Enviro also reported on how the partnership with Michelin is relevant from a strategic perspective and what the company’s long-term plans are.

In 2024, SIGNUS managed a total of 222,406 tonnes of end-of-life tires (ELTs). Based on an average passenger tire weight of 8.1 kg, this equates to approximately 27,337,351 tires — enough to construct around 1,139 racetracks the size of the Jerez Circuit. Of the total volume collected, 12.5% was prepared for reuse as second-hand or retreaded tires. Nearly half (48.5%) was recycled into products for various applications, while the remaining 39% was used for energy recovery, mainly as a substitute for fossil fuels.

On November 13-14, 2019, Weibold’s team attended the biennial Latin American Tire Recycling Conference in Mexico’s Queretaro – a conference uniting industry’s key figures and researchers in the field of end-of-life tire recycling and pyrolysis. This event is considered one of the most important for the tire recycling sector in the region, according to the Latin American Conference official website, and is held as part of the larger XV Latin American Conference on Rubber Technology.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) – a Swedish tire pyrolysis equipment designer and operator – and a global tire manufacturer Michelin have signed three definitive agreements that form the basis of the companies’ strategic partnership. The agreements regulate the terms for a jointly owned plant for the end-of-life tire pyrolysis in Chile, the terms and conditions for Michelin’s use of Enviro’s patented technology, and payment for this, and the terms and conditions for payment to Enviro for deliveries of technology and services to the jointly owned plant in Chile. Before the agreements can enter into force, they must be approved by Enviro’s owners at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM). Notice of the EGM will be published separately.
