A significant highway upgrade in Australia is set to boost road infrastructure while promoting sustainability through the use of end-of-life tyres (EOLT) in construction. The Australian government has announced a large-scale upgrade to the Bruce Highway, a major transport route connecting Brisbane to Cairns.

TSA recently provided the ‘Queensland Regional Business Case for a Circular Economy for Used Tyres’ reports for North & Far North Queensland, and South West Queensland. Developed in partnership with the QLD government, Local Government Association of QLD, local government, industry associations, resource recovery sector participants and community members, the document outlines a business case for greater success in recycling and alleviating the impacts of waste disposal and illegal dumping of used tyres.

The product – called Rubber T-Lok – has been developed by Saferoads and researchers from the University of Melbourne’s Advanced Protective Technologies of Engineering Structures (APTES) Research Group, with funding and support from Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA).

According to the latest Tyre Stewardship Australia’s press release, The Northern Territory (NT) government has announced its 2nd round of funding for the NT recycling modernization fund. The Federal and NT Government are co-investing $2.3 million to increase the Northern Territory’s capacity to recycle and repurpose glass, paper, carboard, plastics and end of life tires, allowing the creation of new value-added products. Under this fund, grants of at least $20,00 are available on a 50:50 co-contribution basis.

The organization also says TSA’s Market Development Fund is now open for applications. ReMade is an initiative by the Australian Government to help industry transform recycled waste into productive outcomes. Tyre Stewardship Australia says it couldn’t be more supportive of the initiative as it believes that by turning waste products like end-of-life tires into a valuable commodity, will help drive a more circular economy, and create accountability across the tire value chain.
