SIGNUS Ecovalor – the Spanish end-of-life tire management authority – registered for the first time with the Spanish Office of Climate Change the Carbon Footprint generated by its activities in 2017. It became the first extended producer responsibility collective system to do so in a verified and certified manner by AENOR.

The Carbon Footprint Registry is voluntary and collects the efforts of Spanish companies, administrations, and other organizations in calculating, reducing, and offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions generated by their activities.

This project was launched with the aim of seeking ways to improve the environmental management of tires. This involves not only finding more applications for the resulting by-products but also engaging all actors involved in the various stages of tire management to advance their individual energy efficiency. Therefore, in its supplier selection processes for collection services, SIGNUS positively values candidates who measure their carbon footprint.

Recently, SIGNUS measured and registered its footprint again after implementing a series of measures to reduce it from 2019 to 2021 compared to 2018 to 2020, achieving a reduction in emissions of 30.09%. To achieve this reduction, SIGNUS developed and implemented a Reduction Plan, promoting the activation of specific measures to improve energy efficiency and optimize routes associated with the collection of tires. These measures are expected to further improve these data in future measurements.

The certified measurement results for this latest period have allowed SIGNUS to obtain two out of the three seals granted by the Spanish Office of Climate Change (Calculate, Reduce, and Offset) related to the commitment of Spanish companies to decarbonization by 2050.
