According to the latest press release by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA), each year the equivalent of over 58 million passenger tires reach their end-of-life in Australia.

TSA says that throughout the life cycle of these tires, it is important to consider the environmental and health impacts, including tire and road wear particles that may be generated while driving tires on the roads, and from tire-derived materials when tires are recovered at the end of their life.

TSA is working hard to increase knowledge on how tire particles may interact with our surrounding environment and to support the industry in improving the management of end-of-life tires and tire-derived material, and any potential risks.

TSA is committed to conducting and gathering research both in Australia and globally.

So far, the research has shown that tire particles associated with most tire-derived products and applications pose a minor risk to the community and surrounding environment. However, it’s also known there’s so much more to learn and TSA is continuing to conduct research to encourage a safe and healthy circular economy for end-of-life tires.
