Recently, New Zealand’s Tyrewise released Milestone 2 report, which details its operational results from January to March 2025. Mark Gilbert, Chair of Auto Stewardship New Zealand said Tyrewise is on route to meeting its targets and contributing to sustainable tyre management.

Tyrewise is showing strong operational results, ongoing improvements to systems, and is engaged in developing strategies to address gaps in infrastructure and market demand for tyre derived products and fuel.

Highlights:

Transparent reporting of tyre movements and financial transactions

  • 5,558 active app users as of 31 March 2025
  • 20,235 jobs booked for tyre collection; 14,008 completed, with the balance awaiting pickup, in transit, being checked, or having been delivered to a consolidation hub
  • App improvements include job search functionality and photo evidence prompts

Nationwide transportation and collection of end-of-life tyres

  • 14,406 tonnes of ELTs collected and transported during the reporting period
  • Transporters were paid $6,681,448 for services
  • 86 public collection sites registered (nine added in this reporting period), with 573 tonnes of tyres collected from them

Processing of end-of-life tyres into tyre-derived products (TDP) and tyre-derived fuel (TDF).

  • 7,186 tonnes of ELTs processed into TDP/TDF, with 327 tonnes used in manufacturing
  • $2,573,052 in incentive payments made to processors
  • 2,027 tonnes exported to foreign markets, with verification processes underway

Development of market growth and investment strategies

  • Domestic market demand for TDP/TDF remains at 36,500 tonnes annually
  • Efforts to develop a circular economy for tyres and expand domestic markets
  • Contestable grant funding for R&D, emerging markets, and community development to be introduced in the next quarter

Participant awareness and satisfaction

  • Surveys of registered participants are planned to measure satisfaction with services, transporters, and interactions with Tyrewise
  • 1,982 service desk tickets received, with 90% resolved within target time

Compliance monitoring

  • 441 site visits to participants or prospective participants completed during the period
  • 52 compliance issues were logged during the period, 29 of these were escalated to the Ministry for the Environment

Audits

  • Three audits were in progress at the end of the period
  • A financial audit (scheme and PSO) was complete at the end of the period, with one change recommended regarding the way invoice payment details are viewed by dual authorisers
