Australia’s highway upgrade to drive demand for recycled tyre materials
A significant highway upgrade in Australia is set to boost road infrastructure while promoting sustainability through the use of end-of-life tyres (EOLT) in construction. The Australian government has announced a large-scale upgrade to the Bruce Highway, a major transport route connecting Brisbane to Cairns.
The project is expected to enhance road safety, improve regional connectivity, and create new opportunities for incorporating recycled tyre materials into road surfaces. With each kilometre of the upgraded highway potentially repurposing up to 2,400 used tyres, this initiative supports national efforts to improve resource recovery. Roads incorporating crumb rubber offer added durability, reducing maintenance costs while enhancing safety by preventing cracks and potholes.
Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative also presents economic opportunities for Queensland’s tyre recycling sector. With 10 TSA-accredited recycling businesses in the state, the project could drive innovation and create new jobs while strengthening regional economies.
Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) encourages policymakers to prioritise the use of recycled tyre materials in road construction, positioning Queensland as a leader in sustainable infrastructure and circular economy initiatives.
