EuRIC warns against scrap export restrictions, urges policymakers to protect recycling industry As debates on steel and aluminum policies continue, EuRIC strongly opposes any restrictions on scrap exports, emphasizing that these exports are essential for sustaining recycling businesses. With EU demand for recycled materials at critically low levels, open trade serves as a vital lifeline for recyclers.

Closing EU borders to scrap exports would have severe environmental and economic repercussions, further weakening Europe’s competitiveness. The ongoing decline in European steel and aluminum production is already alarming for recyclers, as it hinders progress toward green and digital transitions. EuRIC argues that restricting scrap exports would be both unjustified and counterproductive, as the supply of recycled scrap has never been the root cause of reduced activity in EU mills.

Protectionist policies are not the solution to Europe’s trade challenges. Instead, EuRIC urges EU policymakers to maintain open trade and recognize the recycling industry’s crucial role in the economy and sustainability. Supporting innovation and resource generation should be a priority, rather than imposing measures that would stifle progress and endanger the future of European recycling businesses.
