The second AZuR colloquium at the TH Köln Gummersbach campus brought together 18 scientists to discuss innovative methods and possibilities for recycling end-of-life tires (ELTs). Scientists from various universities and institutes presented current studies and research projects in areas such as microwave-assisted devulcanization of rubber, ecosystem development for a circular tire replacement business, and the activation of rubber waste for secondary raw material production.

The event facilitated lively discussions and workshops, doubling the number of participants compared to the previous year. The focus was on sharing scientific insights and planning new research and funding projects related to tire recycling. The AZuR network, consisting of various universities and institutes, promotes collaborative efforts to advance the circular economy for tires. The colloquium received positive feedback for its constructive atmosphere, and plans for future research collaborations were discussed.

The AZuR network, dedicated to sustainable tire circular economy in Europe, involves 56 partners from industry, trade, and academia, covering various aspects of tire life cycle management, from sustainable tire manufacturing to recycling. Universities play a crucial role in providing scientific studies and research to contribute valuable insights to close the material loop in tire recycling.

AZuR network coordinator Christina Guth was pleased that “two of the new university participants spontaneously decided to become AZuR partners, which further strengthens the scientific foundation of our joint commitment. Plastics Technology (KTP) at the University of Paderborn has declared its membership in the AZuR, as has the Institute for Applied Polymer Chemistry (IAP) at the FH Aachen.
