Funds provided by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) will help at least six councils in South Australia commence trials using crumb rubber recycled from scrap tires for asphalt projects. The trials are considered the biggest of its kind in the country, according to TSA CEO Lina Goodman. The move to use recycled rubber is seen as an opportunity to advance circular economy in the state. Roads that rely on recycled tires will serve as alternative to conventional asphalt.

The well attended bi-annual Scrap Tire Recycling Conference was held at the Hyatt Regency in Greenville, South Carolina, and was organized by The Scrap Tire Research and Education Foundation (STREF). A student from Mexico has created a self-repairing asphalt made out of recycled rubber from scrap tires and special additives, which help asphalt escape damage caused by rainwater. Moreover, rain would result in repairing roads as it would serve as a recovery agent, according to the innovation inventor, The Coahuila Autonomous University student Israel Antonio Briseño Carmona. The self-repairing pavement material created by Carmona mostly consists of end-of-life tires, thus, it is probably the first type of asphalt with recycled tire rubber that can, reportedly, handle damage caused by water, such as cracks and potholes, in the long term.

A number of tests and scientific research in Italy have shown that rubber obtained via tire recycling presents a more comfortable horse-riding experience and offers sustainably improved equestrian arena management. SUMO Innovations – a European company specialized in chemical modification of rubber powder for industrial applications – forecasts record-high sales for the end of 2019. According to the company’s recent statement, SUMO Innovations has replaced more than 1000 tons of SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) in polymer-modified-bitumen roofing membranes in Europe. SUMO says that this allowed roofing membrane manufacturers to significantly reduce raw material costs and further demonstrate their commitment to environment-friendly products and green production processes. SUMO can replace 25% of SBS in membranes keeping same performance. The company pinpoints that, in parallel with benefits such as cost reduction and quality enhancement, SUMO products help manufacturers significantly cut CO2 emissions.

Tire Recycling Forum – a major event dedicated to problems of tire recycling and pyrolysis – will be held on June 10-11, 2020 as part of The Tire Cologne. The event is organized by Ewan Scott – chief editor of Tyre and Rubber Recycling magazine. Last events proved to be great success and this time it is scaling up – six giants of the tire industry will take part in the Tire Cologne in Germany, Koelnmesse has recently confirmed. Tire producers such as Hankook, Nexen and other prominent industry players will also attend the event, which will host various conferences and seminars.

Wei Jianhuan, director of the infrastructure office of Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area commented on the road construction saying that rubber asphalt roads on average show greater durability in comparison with conventional paving which requires repairs every 3 to 5 years.
