The initiative Alliance Zukunft Reifen (AZuR) presents itself as a pioneer in tire circular economy at the heart of the "Circular Economy" theme at THE TIRE COLOGNE 2024. From June 4th to 6th, 2024, the international tire and wheel industry will gather at the fair in Cologne to showcase new developments in the field of tires and rims. This year, for the first time, there will be a dedicated section for the "Circular Economy" theme on the platform. 16 AZuR partners will inform visitors about all segments of sustainable tire circular economy at the joint stand in Hall 7.

According to the European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC), in the EU, almost 95% of end-of-life tyres (ELT) are currently collected and treated due to effective waste tyre management systems, largely driven by extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes and recycling investments. However, there has been a lack of EU policies to enhance the circularity of raw materials from ELT over the past two decades. The rubber recycling market faces regulatory challenges, leading to uncertainty for tyre recyclers and hindering innovation and investment. A regulatory framework is necessary to promote material circularity in tyres and develop sustainable applications, maximising environmental benefits and reducing reliance on natural resources.

The conference aims to bring together industry leaders, professionals, and enthusiasts to discuss and collaborate on driving positive change in tyre recycling.

One of the milestones of the new year for AZuR is the establishment of a new, interdisciplinary project group. The fourth AZuR project group, initially consisting of 11 partners under the leadership of Martin von Wolfersdorff, aims to generate fresh ideas for the chemical recycling of used tires. Interdisciplinary AZuR project groups are intended to advance innovative recycling methods for used tires. Currently, there are already project groups focusing on retreading, material recycling of used tires, and rubberized asphalt. The composition of these groups, with partners from industry, trade, and academia, is chosen to incorporate as many relevant aspects and perspectives on a topic as possible.

It covers the international context, including the Basel Convention guidelines for ELT management. It emphasizes the classification of ELT pyrolysis as environmentally sound management, referencing European Union regulations and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's recognition. By passing the Green Deal in 2019, the European Union (EU) set the course for more sustainable investments, for example in areas like renewable energy, biodiversity, or circular economy. The goal is to reach a climate-neutral economy in the EU by 2050, with a reduction goal of 55% by in 2030. To achieve these climate goals, the Green Deal includes an investment plan of 1 trillion euros over the next 10 years. Despite this huge investment, the EU depends also on the support of the private sector to achieve the Paris climate agreement.

According to the latest Pyrum Innovations AG’s (Pyrum) press release, Pyrum and BASF Antwerpen NV have signed a new cooperation agreement on November 15, 2023. This provides for a conditional loan of initially EUR 25 million, available in tranches, which is intended to serve as start-up financing for the implementation of Pyrum Innovations AG's specific project pipeline by 2026. The subject of the agreement is the planning, project planning and construction of at least three new plants with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons of used tires each using the funds made available. Pyrum plans to use the funds in particular for the construction of the announced plant in Saarland as well as the equity contribution and co-financing of up to five of the projects announced in recent months with financially strong partners.
