Pyrolyx is a company specializing in recovered carbon black, tire-derived oil and steel production – these are the byproducts of scrap tire pyrolysis that are considered valuable for industrial use. US-based Bridgestone announced recently that it has commenced producing tires containing carbon black (rCB) at its facility in Des Moines. In tire production, the company relies on carbon black supplies from its partner Delta-Energy, and uses its product, D-E Black, as the only source of the recycled material. Currently, Bridgestone has bought some 215 metric tons of Delta Energy’s rCB – this is the equivalent of over 60,000 scrap tires. By the end of next year, the company expects to apply around 6,800 of D-E Black, which would reduce over 20 million pounds of carbon emissions.

Tire producer Continental A.G will start applying recovered carbon black (rCB) obtained via tire pyrolysis method and produced by German Pyrolyx A.G. after two companies have reached a five-year deal. According to the contract, Pyrolyx will be supplying some 10,000 metric tons of rCB annually to Continental’s facilities in numerous countries. This will help Pyrolyx to increase its sales and grow in North America and eastern Europe as additional plants will be commissioned as part of the agreement.

Tire pyrolysis company from the Netherlands Black Bear Carbon has stated this month that it is ready to construct one more recovered carbon black plant at the Port of Rotterdam. However, Black Bear did not reveal the annual capacity of its anticipated facility. To recover carbon black, end-of-life tires will undergo thermal treatment at the facility as granulate will be decomposed from the waste materials. They will be further applied in production of carbon black and pyrolysis oil.

Recovered Carbon Black (rCB) producer Klean Industries Inc. will become equipment supplier for five more India-based rCB upgrading facilities after signing a letter of intent; this move brings an overall number of facilities in the Asian country developed within the last two years to eight. The corporation has noted that the demand for rCB is substantial, and Klean has expansion plans throughout Asia. The demand growth comes at a time when the industry is witnessing virgin carbon black deficit and import levies in India.

Recently, an expert in tire-derived carbon black Martin von Wolfersdorff shared his views on the prospects recovered carbon black (rCB) in tire-to-tire recycling. In his press release Mr. von Wolfersdorff said he appreciated it when tier one carbon black companies spoke about rCB. The expert says top carbon black producers attend rCB workshops, presentations or conferences organized by Wolfersdorff Consulting, and there are ample opportunities for collaboration between the rCB and the CB industry, some of which have been highlighted in his Carbon Black World 2018 presentation in Düsseldorf (see image below).
