The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) announced the speakers for its highly anticipated 2023 Rubber Recycling Symposium which will take place on October 4-5 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. “This year’s event is going to be one for the books. Our 2023 lineup is comprised of stellar speakers from key global markets including the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe; and brings some of the true experts and leaders in their respective fields,” says Carol Hochu, President and CEO of TRAC.

According to the latest press release by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA), Australia recovers close to 90% of passenger, bus and truck tires, but the remaining 10% gap is critical to achieving national waste reduction goals, reducing carbon emissions and deterring tire eco-hazards in the future. According to Bayside Council (Sydney), in June 2023, Bayside conducted a trial using recycled rubber from end-of-life car and truck tires in the asphalt mix for the first road on Willison Road, Bexley, Sydney. After more than two years of industry-led research and consultation, Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) has published its report into the use, recovery, and recycling of Australia’s off-the-road tires, conveyors, and tracks (OTR rubber products). According to TSA, OTR rubber products are critical for the Australian economy. Acording to the recent case study by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA)., Rubber T-Lok – a new generation of safety barriers made from tire-derived materials (TDM) – offering enhanced safety benefits, a longer life span and cost-effective solutions for a variety of industries. An innovative use of tire derived material that will enhance public safety and support the recovery of end-of-life tires in Australia – 1 kilometre of T-Lok barriers uses 12 tonnes of recycled rubber which is the equivalent of 2,000 passenger tires, and it is projected the product could use up to 60,000 (360 tonnes) passenger tires per year.

Manufacturers’ Monthly magazine reports that a steel manufacturing process using waste rubber feedstock has been commercialized in a collaborative project with Australian steel manufacturer and TSA Accredited Recycler Molycop, UNSW, Crawford Boots, and the AMGC. The company's electric arc furnace (EAF) in Newcastle uses less energy and produces fewer emissions thanks to the new polymer injection process, which also prevents waste rubber from going to the landfill. The technology, which was created in association with Crawford Boots, the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC), and the UNSW Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMaRT) Centre, will now be made available for export to global EAF operators.

By recovering resources like steel and rubber from end-of-life tires, Queensland can build high-performance roads and generate valuable commercial markets that promote local jobs and manufacturing across the state. “Putting crumb rubber in roads is a winning circular economy formula already happening across Australia and around the world. “It’s time for Queensland State and Local government to start mandating their roads be made using Australian crumb rubber. By not mandating locally available rubber resources for roads, Queensland risks letting its road sector fall behind on industry best practice,” says Lina Goodman, CEO of Tyre Stewardship Australia.
