Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) – the authority responsible for end-of-life tire management and regulations in the country – is calling for all property developers, facility managers, landlords and farming communities to remain vigilant ahead of the Commonwealth’s waste export ban on whole used tires coming into effect 1 December 2021. In its press release from September 21, TSA stresses the organization was established in 2014 to implement the national Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (Scheme) which aims to promote the development of viable markets for end-of-life tires. The Scheme has multiple benefits including transforming a waste product into a useful commodity, creating new industries and employment opportunities while also reducing the environmental harm caused by the illegal dumping, stockpiling and mismanagement of end-of-life tires.

Austroads – the collective of the Australian and New Zealand transport agencies, representing all levels of government – has published the results of research which proposes a specification for the use of a binder containing crumb rubber from recycled tires in the construction of asphalt pavements. Ross Guppy, Austroads Transport Infrastructure Program Manager says there has been an increased focus on using sustainable and recycled materials for road construction and maintenance. “Crumb rubber is predominantly obtained from vehicle tires. Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) has presented a new innovative project that coverts scrap tires into durable, quality concrete for the Sports Turf Industry. This solution for recycled tires has been named Golfelx, the TSA reported on its social media accounts. Golflex uses waste tires and recycles them into rubber crumb that is used in golf development projects. This application is ingeniously used in bunkers as it can improve sand bunker drainage and it has a positive environmental impact.

TSA reports that tire giant Hankook is the latest manufacturer to partner with Tyre Stewardship Australia in a commitment to the responsible disposal of end-of-life tires. The Hankook Tire & Technology Group announced in the end of July it is the newest contributor to the National Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme, taking the total number of importers to nine. Hankook Managing Director Ted Choi said the decision to sign up to the Scheme was recognition of the work of TSA and its achievements. “By cultivating win-win relationships like this one with Tyre Stewardship Australia, Hankook shows it too is a leader in preserving and protecting the environment for the next generation – a responsibility we take seriously,” Mr Choi explained.

The equivalent of more than a million used car iyres can now be recycled to make high quality crumb rubber bitumen for Australian roads in a ‘game changing’ partnership between Puma Bitumen and Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA). Through two significant equipment investments – partly funded by TSA – Puma Bitumen has dramatically expanded its manufacturing capacity and widened the range of crumb rubber technology for both sprayed seals and asphalt currently available in Australia.
