The European Commission’s December 2025 Environment Omnibus package is not a complete solution for the recycling industry, but it is an important signal of direction. For companies active in end-of-life tire (ELT) recycling, plastic recycling, pyrolysis, recovered carbon black (rCB), and pyrolysis oil upgrading, the package is best understood as a first-step competitiveness reform: it promises faster procedures, lower administrative burden, and a clearer policy bridge toward the Circular Economy Act expected in 2026.

As recovered carbon black (rCB) gains importance as a key output from tire pyrolysis, Netzsch Group is positioning its technology to support producers in upgrading pyrolysis char into high-performance materials. In Episode 90 of the Tyre and Rubber Recycling Podcast, Andreas Steinlage, Senior Business Development Manager at Netzsch, outlined how the company’s grinding, classification, and processing systems are increasingly being deployed across the tire recycling value chain.

With the name change, Pyrum wants to strengthen its brand identity and emphasise the independence and quality of its products. The reason for this is that the rCB and thermolysis oil available on the market do not always have the same specifications. rCB, for example, consists not only of recovered carbon black, but also contains inorganic additives from the tyres. This results in different mixtures that are not suitable for all applications. Pyrum’s products TTO® and TTB® are produced in the company’s own patented thermolysis process and have a precisely defined mixing ratio and specific properties that distinguish them from other products on the market and therefore require a unique designation.

ASTM reports that A new ASTM International standard will encourage the consideration of the entire life cycle of tires by providing a classification system for recovered carbon black (rCB). The new standard (D8632) was developed by ASTM’s recovered carbon black committee (D36). "Recovered carbon black is a semi-reinforcing filler obtained from post-consumer rubber products such as tires and conveyor belts,” says ASTM member Jorge Lacayo-Pineda. “Through various thermal decomposition processes, the feedstock is converted into oil, gas, and raw rCB. After subsequent post-processing steps, the final product is rCB.”
