The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), in collaboration with the Tire Recycling Foundation, today announced the launch of a webinar series designed to accelerate the growth of scalable, profitable end-use markets for End-of-Life Tires (ELT). The series entitled “The Road to 100% Tire Circularity: ELTs Going Full Circle” will kick off in September and run through early 2026, covering three of the most promising ELT markets – tire-derived aggregate (TDA), molded and extruded products, and rubber-modified asphalt (RMA) – followed by a capstone session on grants and funding opportunities to support market growth.

According to Rubber News, there's a troubling trend in the tire recycling industry: in 2013, 96% of end-of-life tires were recycled, but by 2021, this dropped to 71%. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) will release its 2023 scrap tire study soon, expecting a slight increase from 2021. However, tens of millions of tires still end up in landfills or are illegally dumped each year.

In May 2022, Liberty Tire Recycling – one of the main providers of tire recycling services with over 35 locations in the United States and Canada – participated in a Michigan EGLE grant project with Clare County and Michigan Technological University using Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA) in a base layer of the roadway and SmartMIX rubber as an additive for the hot mix surface layer. The TDA was used in a section of the roadway with a swamp on both sides – providing a base layer that will not heave and shove due to winter freezing.

As the Biden Administration continues to coordinate the implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), joined by 15 stakeholder organizations sent a joint letter highlighting available technologies to support national infrastructure improvements: rubber modified asphalt and tire derived aggregate. The letter outlined the benefits of these materials and identified the specific provisions within the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law where these materials would qualify for consideration.

As the U.S. administration begins implementation of the historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), USTMA is urging congressional leadership to continue working on tire policy and related transportation sustainability initiatives. While the IIJA includes several provisions that would advance scrap tire markets and improve the resiliency of the nation’s infrastructure, USTMA has identified six specific policy proposals – ranging from tax incentives to additional research dollars and procurement commitments – that will strengthen the American tire manufacturing industry and help the country develop roadways with the future in mind.

Since 1996, Nova Scotia’s tires have been processed and recycled by Divert Nova Scotia (Divert NS). According to the organization, more than one million used tires are diverted from the province’s landfills every year and 70 percent of those go to Halifax C&D Recycling to be recycled into a tire-derived aggregate (TDA) for construction of engineering applications.

CM informs that the demand for tire-derived fuel (TDF) is significantly increasing thanks to its advantages over traditional fuels, such as providing higher heating value than coal or wood. The heat produced from TDF is approximately thirty percent higher than that of coal and more than twice that of wood. TDF also provides lower sulfur oxide emissions when compared with coal, which has a higher sulfur content. Furthermore, combustion of TDF provides better operational consistency than other fuels used in waste-to-energy systems.
