On December 4th, 2023, Reoil Sp. z o.o. of Poland was awarded REACH Registration EC: 948-949-8 for pyrolysis oil from waste rubber and tires. This makes Reoil the first manufacturer in the world with a permit to produce/import the substance or produce or import an article containing it in quantities exceeding 1,000 MT per year in Europe. Reoil is a tire pyrolysis technology developer and operator in Poland. Reoil has been producing tire derived oils and carbon products at their Bukowna site since 2016. Their successful operation allowed them to achieve positive results over the last three years, achieving a turn-over of EUR 11 million from sales of product in 2023 with an EBITDA margin of EUR 6 million.

Pyrolysis, an advanced chemical recycling route for End-of-Life Tires (ELT), is experiencing a boom in the last few years. As seen objectively, there is no one best design and/or process mode. Bridgestone Corporation recently announced that it has commenced the production of tire derived oil and recovered carbon black through pyrolysis of used tires using test units installed at Bridgestone Innovation Park in Kodaira City, Tokyo. This initiative is aimed at promoting the social implementation of chemical recycling technologies that enable precise pyrolysis of used tires. Wastefront AS – a Norwegian waste tire recycling company – in collaboration with leading Swedish chemical engineering company Hulteberg Chemistry & Engineering AB – announced that it has been awarded a €2 million grant from Eureka Eurostars, the world’s largest funding-program for business collaborations in creating innovative products for commercialisation, and the Norwegian Research Council and the Swedish Innovation Agency. The total project-funding amounts to €2.076 million: €1.038 million from Eurostars and €1.038 million from project partners.

Today, more than 80 percent of the carbon backbone that most chemicals are made of is still derived from fossil raw materials. This means that neither the basic chemicals, which are made from petroleum feedstocks, nor the products made from them are sustainable. The load limits, such as climate change, ocean acidification and integrity of the biosphere, are far exceeded by most chemicals. Some chemicals even exceed Earth's exposure limits by more than 100 times. This is the conclusion reached by the University (ETH) in Zurich in a recent study published in the expert journal Green Chemistry (2021, 23, 9881) in which the most produced 490 chemicals have been analysed through the lens of seven planetary boundaries representing critical biophysical limits that should never be exceeded.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) has formally submitted an environmental permit application for the recycling plant that the company intends to establish in Uddevalla, Sweden. The application pertained to the establishment of a tire pyrolysis plant on an industrial site in the Lillesjö district of Uddevalla Municipality. The facility would have an initial annual capacity of 30,000 tons of end-of-life tires but the long-term plan for the facility is to process up to 60,000 tons per year. Enviro expects the application process to take up to one year.
