The UK Government’s plan for 10 percent of all jet fuel to be SAF by 2030 is a major boost for the region’s green economy. The SAF mandate, set to become law in January 2025, faces challenges due to insufficient feedstock and high demand. Currently, global SAF supply is at two million metric tons, while demand is growing at 45 percent annually, with commitments from over 40 airlines.

Entyr Limited – an Australian company delivering a complete circular solution for end-of-life tires – has raised $7.9 million AUD in capital to further develop its Stapylton plant in Queensland and achieve full commercial capacity. The company utilizes a patented thermal process to produce high-quality products from recycled tires, which are already being sold in commercial markets. Entyr aims to complete the transition to full commercialization this year. The funds raised will support the expansion of Entyr's Stapylton facility and facilitate the final stage of site commercialization. CEO David Wheeley expressed gratitude for the support from both new and existing investors.

On March 14 2023, Reoil Sp. z o.o. – a company recycling end-of-life tires using continuous pyrolysis process, announced it had signed an LOI with Japan’s Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd – a global tire manufacturer headquartered in Japan – for the commercialization of recovered carbon black (rCB). Through this agreement, the two companies will jointly develop products allowing Reoil’s recovered carbon black to partially replace virgin carbon blacks that produced from fossil fuels. About Reoil Reoil was one of the world’s pioneers in developing a successful continuous pyrolysis technology, which it implemented in its first end-of-life tire recycling plant in Bukowno (Małopolskie, Poland) yet in 2015.

The International Organization for Standardization (2008, 2013) defines chemical recycling as a production of new raw materials by changing the chemical structure of polymers (e.g., plastic, rubber) through depolymerization, excluding energy recovery and incineration. Whereby depolymerisation is understood as a reversion of a polymer to its monomer(s) or to a polymer of lower relative molecular mass. This irreversible chemical decomposition (depolymerization) in pyrolysis processes is caused solely by a rise in temperature in an inert or oxygen free environment (UIPAC, 2021).

This article should give an overview over the recent development trends regarding the options for an upgrade of the tire-derived oil (TDO) with chemical and physical techniques. In two previous articles we have already dealt with the production of limonene and highlighted the advantages of fractional distillation of TDO. As circular economy concept and tire recycling are becoming more popular all over the world, the first issue that may arise is the need to secure the raw material, namely end-of-life tires (ELT). Normally, tire recycling companies source their feedstock from collection programs or directly from tire stockpiles. Local ELT stockpiles in developing countries eventually may have limited supplies, because if ELT regulations were not in place before, tires may have been simply landfilled or burnt.

Pyrolyx is a company specializing in recovered carbon black, tire-derived oil and steel production – these are the byproducts of scrap tire pyrolysis that are considered valuable for industrial use. For instance, recovered carbon black can be used in manufacturing of new tires and as colorant in synthetic rubber production.

Ecolomondo Corporation – a Canadian supplier of thermal decomposition process technologies for end-of-life-tires – announced that it has selected Maylan Group Inc. of Hawkesbury, Ontario, to construct the building that would house its new Thermal Decomposition Process (TDP) turnkey facility to be located in Hawkesbury, Ontario. The Company and the Contractor have recently signed a binding Design-Build contract with a not-to-exceed price of $6.6 million, with substantial completion expected by January 15, 2020.
