Birla Carbon’s net zero announcement aligns with The Paris Agreement, signed as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on climate-change mitigation, adaptation, and finance. It also aligns with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Tire Industry Project SDG Roadmap aimed at addressing health and environmental impacts associated with the life cycle impact of tires towards a sustainable future. Within the Aditya Birla Group, Birla Carbon is collaborating with sister companies to develop decarbonization initiatives through the Aditya Birla Science and Technology Center.

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a voluntary scheme that is applicable for the bioeconomy and circular economy for various sectors. All kinds of biomass, waste and residues, non-biological renewables, and recycled carbon materials can be certified under ISCC PLUS. This globally recognized certification is in line with Birla Carbon’s aspiration to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and the successful introduction of ContinuaTM Sustainable Carbonaceous Material (SCM).

Birla Carbon has announced the closing of a US$750 million Sustainability Linked Loan (SLL) with a syndicate of more than 15 institutions on December 17, 2021. The loan funds would be utilized to refinance Birla Carbon's current debts. The ANZ Group is the deal's only sustainability coordinator. US-based Bridgestone announced recently that it has commenced producing tires containing carbon black (rCB) at its facility in Des Moines. In tire production, the company relies on carbon black supplies from its partner Delta-Energy, and uses its product, D-E Black, as the only source of the recycled material. Currently, Bridgestone has bought some 215 metric tons of Delta Energy’s rCB – this is the equivalent of over 60,000 scrap tires. By the end of next year, the company expects to apply around 6,800 of D-E Black, which would reduce over 20 million pounds of carbon emissions.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) has developed a new type of recovered carbon black with improved dispersion properties. The new type of carbon black has been developed to meet demand from the tire and rubber industry. The new type of carbon black has been produced for some time at Enviro’s plant in Åsensbruk, Sweden, and has acquired properties enhancing its interaction with other chemicals and ingredients when manufacturing tires and rubber parts, for example.

SIGNUS – the Spanish end-of-life tire management authority – registered for the first time with the Spanish Office of Climate Change the Carbon Footprint generated by its activities in 2017. It became the first extended producer responsibility collective system to do so in a verified and certified manner by AENOR. The Carbon Footprint Registry is voluntary and collects the efforts of Spanish companies, administrations, and other organizations in calculating, reducing, and offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions generated by their activities.
