The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), in collaboration with the Tire Recycling Foundation, today announced the launch of a webinar series designed to accelerate the growth of scalable, profitable end-use markets for End-of-Life Tires (ELT). The series entitled “The Road to 100% Tire Circularity: ELTs Going Full Circle” will kick off in September and run through early 2026, covering three of the most promising ELT markets – tire-derived aggregate (TDA), molded and extruded products, and rubber-modified asphalt (RMA) – followed by a capstone session on grants and funding opportunities to support market growth.

By passing the Green Deal in 2019, the European Union (EU) set the course for more sustainable investments, for example in areas like renewable energy, biodiversity, or circular economy. The goal is to reach a climate-neutral economy in the EU by 2050, with a reduction goal of 55% by in 2030. To achieve these climate goals, the Green Deal includes an investment plan of 1 trillion euros over the next 10 years. Despite this huge investment, the EU depends also on the support of the private sector to achieve the Paris climate agreement.

Belgian company RISORCE (Renewable, Innovative Solutions towards Recycling & Circular Economy) has closed a €12.5M round of financing from GREEN.er (Recytyre), Noshaq, Wallonie Entreprendre and various players in the financial sector in order to build a new end-of-life tire recycling plant in the province of Liège. Using a pyrolysis process, this plant will enable the equivalent of half of Belgium’s car tires to be processed locally.

Sharing the same vision of implementing circularity within the rubber and tire manufacturing industry, Tyre Recycling Solutions (TRS) announced a partnership with Contec, promoting their products and technologies as well as joint research and development activities.

According to a recent press release by Ecore International, the company has acquired HTI Recycling, a prominent tire collection, recycling, reuse, and crumb rubber manufacturing business based in Lockport, New York. The acquisition also includes HTI’s subsidiaries, Edge Rubber Recycling and D&G Heavy Equipment Leasing.

Supply of pyrolysis oil from end-of-life tires is an important step in the commercialization of BASF’s ChemCyclingTM project. Moreover, BASF sees pyrolysis oil from end-of-life tires is an additional raw material source next to oil from mixed plastic waste. The new agreement stipulates that partners will conduct a joint feasibility study that targets the adaption of New Energy’s proprietary pyrolysis technology to the conversion of other plastic waste streams.

State-of-the-art pyrolysis processes are an efficient, viable and sustainable approach for the valorisation of end-of-life tires (ELT) into oil, gas and recovered Carbon Black (rCB). They are thus an important step towards the transition to a low carbon, more sustainable, resource efficient, circular economy in line with the EU Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Recovered carbon black (rCB) represents a transformative opportunity in the transition toward sustainable industrial materials. Derived from the pyrolysis of end-of-life tires (ELT), rCB offers a compelling alternative to virgin carbon black (vCB), significantly reducing environmental impacts while supporting circular economy principles. As industries seek to reduce their carbon footprint, enhance resource efficiency, and increase the use of recycled inputs, rCB has emerged as a commercially viable and environmentally responsible material.

Currently rubber recycled from end-of-life tires (ELTs) was ranked 3rd among the most suitable candidate streams for which to develop further EU-wide end-of-waste (EoW) criteria in the European Commission JRC’s report. The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ association (ETRMA) and the European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC) are pleased about this prioritization exercise, although they are right to wonder why there is no date on the horizon. The 3rd place (after Plastic and Textiles) is still worth a medal, nevertheless. Considering the enormous potential of chemical recycling (pyrolysis) of ELTs, the (very) few missing points could have been made up (author's opinion) and a time horizon might be foreseeable.
