As millions of bicycle tires are disposed of every year around the world, some companies are becoming more conscious about how sustainable they are. BikeBiz magazine reports that Gecko – a British manufacturer of bicycle tires – has patented a new lightweight expanded, cellular rubber technology, where old tires can be returned, recycled and used in the manufacture of new bicycle tires – with potentially up to 30% of the new tire composed of recycled material. In fact, an independent life cycle assessment analysis of the Gecko tire showed that it would be at least 70% less damaging to the environment compared to an equivalent pneumatic bicycle tire. “I set up my own company about 16 years ago to develop an expanded, cellular rubber technology, with the aim of using it in tires,” says Gecko’s Richard Adams. “You’d often find bicycles in sheds and garages with flat or cracked tires not being used. We thought the answer to that would be a solid tire.

Researchers at the RMIT University in Australia have developed a new technology to manufacture concrete made from recycled rubber materials that is stronger and more durable than the traditional product. Recycled concrete aggregates made with ground tyre rubber and everything from coffee cups to building rubble offer huge environmental benefits, from reducing landfill and CO2 emissions, to saving natural resources and boosting the circular economy. Now researchers from RMIT have developed a new method for casting prefabricated concrete products made with rubber tyres and construction and demolition waste that are up to 35% stronger than traditional concrete. Professor Yufei Wu from the School of Engineering led the development of the Rubberized Concrete Processing Technology (RCP-Tech) and said it offered an efficient and inexpensive solution.

Michelin reports it has successfully validated the use of Carbios’ enzymatic recycling technology for PET plastic waste in its tires. Carbios confirms the potential of its recycled PET to address all types of applications – from bottles to clothing fibers and now technical fibers. The validation of Carbios’ technology in Michelin’s tests, marks a new step towards 100% sustainable tires. PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate) is a petroleum-based plastic wherein the monomers used, ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, come from the transformation of petroleum. PET is the raw material for one of the main textile fibers used in tire reinforcements.

The 63% sustainable-material demonstration truck tire includes 15 featured ingredients across 20 tire components, including those described below. This demonstration tire is labelled “A” in fuel efficiency meaning it can offer the same fuel saving as the most efficient Goodyear truck tires currently offered.

An end-of-life car and truck tire collection program was launched by Dmitrovsky Rubber Plant (Dmitrovsky Zavod RTI) in June 2020. The company rallied together with Dunlop Tire CIS to open joint tire collection points in Moscow and Tver regions. An award-winning innovation method for tire recycling is crumb rubber devulcanization. The original process was developed by a scholar whose innovation was commercialized by Tyromer Inc. – the Canadian company founded by a national university. What makes devulcanization stand out is the fact that it does not require the application of any chemical solvents. Moreover, Tyromer’s process helps reuse waste tire rubber in new tires and in retreads – this was hardly possible before.

Pyrum Innovations AG has completed its first MaxCap test, running at full capacity at its new plant in Dillingen/Saar. Between September 27 and October 4, the TAD 3 line was gradually brought to 100% throughput, maintaining peak operation for a week. While solid output met 100% capacity, oil and gas production reached 95% due to a quench pump blockage, an issue mitigated in future tests by using a reserve pump.

Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) has already started preliminary discussions with Thermo Lysi SA for the development of a new plant for the recycling of used tires in Greece. Pyrum has agreed to carry out all the planning necessary to obtain the building permits required under Greek law for the new facility, to be built approximately 140 km north of Athens. The facility will have a capacity of 20,000 tons of end-of-life tires per year and will therefore be able to cover almost half of the total amount of end-of-life tires in Greece – the country generates around 45,000 tons of waste tires annually. The new plant will help sustainably recycle these used tires and recover valuable resources.
