The Tire Recycling Foundation (TRF), a joint initiative led by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) and the Tire Industry Association (TIA), announced its Board of Directors and Board President, Anne Forristall Luke, President and CEO of USTMA. The inaugural Board consists of 15 global industry leaders with deep knowledge and expertise in the manufacturing, recycling and transportation industries. This diverse group will help steer the Foundation’s mission to drive innovation in tire reuse markets, secure funding for critical projects, allocate grants for research, education, intervention and demonstration projects and enhance the sustainability of the tire recycling supply chain.

ACI’s 2nd European Carbon Black Summit will take place on the 22nd and 23rd June 2022, in Frankfurt, Germany. With ever increasing focus on sustainability & recycling and fluctuation of feedstock prices, the European carbon black industry is facing changes in the near future. Recently, an expert in tire-derived carbon black Martin von Wolfersdorff shared his views on the prospects recovered carbon black (rCB) in tire-to-tire recycling. In his press release Mr. von Wolfersdorff said he appreciated it when tier one carbon black companies spoke about rCB. The expert says top carbon black producers attend rCB workshops, presentations or conferences organized by Wolfersdorff Consulting, and there are ample opportunities for collaboration between the rCB and the CB industry, some of which have been highlighted in his Carbon Black World 2018 presentation in Düsseldorf (see image below). Following on from last year's hugely successful online event and the 2019 in-person event, Smithers have announced Recovered Carbon Black plans to travel to Amsterdam on the 23-24 November 2021.

The parties plan to complete the DFS by the end of June 2021 and anticipate the project being financed before the end of 2021, with construction taking place in 2022 and operations starting in 2023. It’s envisioned that with Klean’s intellectual property and know-how for the processing of scrap tires and its ability to apply its proven portfolio of IP on a global basis, starting with an operating tire recycling facility in Greece will shorten the project development cycle. This project is expected to transform end-of-life tires into high quality, valuable raw materials primarily a high grade recovered carbon black (“rCB”) and recovered fuel oil or what is known as pyrolysis oil akin to an MDO oil. This plant will be fully integrated with Klean’s proprietary tire char upgrading system that enables the economic conversion of low-value tire char into high-value carbon black replacements which can replace virgin Carbon Black by volumes of 10% up to 100% depending on the specific application. Klean estimates that the carbon emission offsets from the Pyrolysis Hellas facility will be in excess of 100,000 metric tons annually.

Today, more than 80 percent of the carbon backbone that most chemicals are made of is still derived from fossil raw materials. This means that neither the basic chemicals, which are made from petroleum feedstocks, nor the products made from them are sustainable. The load limits, such as climate change, ocean acidification and integrity of the biosphere, are far exceeded by most chemicals. Some chemicals even exceed Earth's exposure limits by more than 100 times. This is the conclusion reached by the University (ETH) in Zurich in a recent study published in the expert journal Green Chemistry (2021, 23, 9881) in which the most produced 490 chemicals have been analysed through the lens of seven planetary boundaries representing critical biophysical limits that should never be exceeded.
