As we informed earlier, Frankfurt will host the 2nd European Carbon Black Summit on 22–23 June 2022. The two day event will bring together senior representatives of the different stakeholders involved in this sector, from producers, technology developers, rubber producers, chemical suppliers, researchers, as well as other influential stakeholders from the value chain.
On the 6th of February, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) announced opening a committee which will develop standards for the recovered carbon black (rCB). The goal of the ASTM’s new committee D36 will be to establish and update standards in end-of-life tire (ELT) and scrap rubber decomposition, standards in material characteristics and sustainability. ASTM declared that the committee will be formed and governed by the members of its existing committee on carbon black (D24) who engaged in working with a vast portfolio of standards on recycled carbon black goods.

CSRC group's board has approved a partnership with Eco Infinic Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of SHEICO group, to invest in the recovered carbon black (rCB) business at the former site of Continental Carbon Company (CCC) Phenix plant. This joint venture aims to develop the North American market for recovered carbon black and commence production in 2026. According to CSRC, the new plant will be one of the largest in North America, with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons of rCB, 35,000 tons of tire pyrolysis oil (TPO), and 2,300 tons of steel wire. The joint venture will be 65% owned by Eco Infinic, with CSRC and CCC jointly holding 35%. Specifically, the capital contributions to the joint venture are as follows: CSRC will contribute USD 12,500,000 in cash for 21% of the shares; CCC will contribute assets worth USD 8,500,000 for 14% of the shares; and Eco Infinic will contribute USD 39,000,000 in cash for 65% of the shares.
Ecolomondo Corporation – a cleantech company specializing in the commercialization of its Thermal Decomposition Process (TDP) proprietary recycling technology and the global deployment of TDP turnkey facilities – announced that Reactor 1of its 2-reactor TDP plant in Hawkesbury, Ontario, has been certified by TSSA (Technical Standards and Safety Authority) for the use of the syngas (process gas) produced from TDP production cycles as the energy source to fire up reactors.
The move comes after the Austrian firm earlier presented its innovative way of tire recycling that seeks to recycle rubber from tires into solid carbon, also known as recovered carbon black. Alternatively, the method allows getting a hydrocarbon mixture like pyrolysis oil and gas. Apart from commercial application of recycled products, the process is of value as it is totally in line with circular economy’s principles and it does not require external energy sources.
Significant technological synergies between South Korean LDC proprietary Green carbon black technology and Swiss TRS unique water-jet milling technology draw both players to sign a MoU for a first jointly owned TyreXol™ rubber powder processing plant in South Korea, with further ambitions to expand the relationship to the Asian continent.
Pyrolyx AG – an international tire pyrolysis operator – has now become an official supplier of recovered carbon black (rCB) of Continental AG as the two parties agreed to sign a 5-year contract ruling that about 15,000 metric tons of the product will be delivered every year. Nevertheless, Pyrolyx stated that the scope of the deal on the supplies might be increased if demand escalates.
