When it comes to recycling end-of-life tires into new products, the processors and manufacturers are the heart of the tire recycling industry in British Columbia. After end-of-life tires collected, they are processed into crumb rubber and then sent to manufacturers to turn those broken-down rubber materials into new products like playground surfaces, athletic tracks, garden mulch, and a product that is important in the farming industry, but perhaps less-known to the public–horse mats.

The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet is now accepting grant proposals for projects that promote the use of recycled Kentucky end-of-life tires. As reported by Kentucky Today, the Cabinet will provide grant funding for landscaping mulch projects, walking trails, poured-in-place playgrounds, sidewalks or other surfaces, horse trailer or stall mats, tree wells or other products utilizing recycled tires from Kentucky. Projects that are not eligible for grants include athletic field or loose crumb rubber playground applications, tire-derived aggregate, tire-derived fuel, rubber-modified asphalt or civil engineering projects.

In order to benefit from the most recent technology available to the trucking industry, Liberty Tire Recycling decided to switch from short-term leasing to full-service leasing and teamed with PacLease. By recycling more than 190 million tires annually, Liberty Tire reclaims approximately 3 billion pounds of rubber each year. Liberty Tire's recycled rubber is utilized to make creative, environmentally friendly goods including playground and landscape equipment that are offered at more than 15,000 retail establishments across North America.

Liberty Tire Recycling – the premier North American provider of tire recycling services – will open a new manufacturing facility in Sanford in February 2022, creating 30 new jobs in the area. The new facility will produce rubberized mulch, a resilient and sustainable alternative to traditional mulch, made from recycled end-of-life tires.

The company receives truck tires from local businesses, separates the steel from the rubber and crushes the rubber into a crumb that is fine enough for roads, playground surfaces and rubber ramps. Mr. Pennington says that the company recycles 100% of tires arriving to the facility. The general manager said while other companies exported old tires for recycling, their aim was to recycle material in the Western Australia. According to the general manager, after cutting the tire walls, they stripped the rubber from the bead, extracting the steel to go to scrap metal recycling.

Over 70 grant applicants will get some $1.2 million of funding from The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) to conduct scrap tire community clearance efforts within the state. In addition, the authority will provide funds to sponsor waste tire piles removal at private lands to five more applicants. Scrap tire rubber collected as part of the funded efforts will be further used in road paving projects after undergoing recycling. EGLE also said that waste tires will be transformed into rubber mulch for playgrounds.

Even though earlier media reports stated that the EU was about to introduce a legislation prohibiting the use of artificial turf on playing surfaces, The European Commission stated that the information was misleading. The authoritative body added that it was only focusing its work on health risks posed by some microplastics and looking into developing its sustainable substitutes.

The European authorities have introduced the limits for the PAHs in the recycled rubber used in synthetic turf pitches, and its content must not exceed 20 mg/kg. If the limit is met, a playground or a field can be considered safe for children and sportsmen. The evaluation of all possible risks has been conducted by The Risk Assessment Committee of the European Chemicals Agency, (ECHA). According to ECHA, it was important to make this research as the rubber contains controversial and potentiallly harmful PAH particles. If within the limits, the rubber that is made out of recycled end-of-life tires is safe and not harmful to people who spend much time training and playing on the grounds that contain this type of recycled material.

Equine Air, a product developed after Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) teamed up with Flexiroc, was used for a trial on 550 square meters of Pakenham Racing Club Tynong race track in 2018. The findings of the experiment with the trail were positive, and the riders admitted the benefits of the new surfacing. To manufacture the product, developers used more than 3,000 tires – this equals 27 tons of recycled rubber. It has an innovative design enabling the product to be used for difficult ground conditions. Moreover, it helps the surface to drain quickly following rain.
