TNU (Tratamiento Neumáticos Usados) – a Spanish EPR agency for end-of-life tires – reports it will be present in the new edition of Ecofira with its traveling exhibition on tire recycling “Recicla y Sonríe" ("Recycle and Smile"). The exhibition addresses the social, economic and environmental importance of the treatment and recycling of end-of-life tires. Used tires collected annually by TNU are claimed to 100% recycled. When recycled, the components of end-of-life tires: rubber, steel and textile fiber, become materials and energy resources.

Using electronic identification chips in new tires has been found to be an efficient practice that tire producers can undertake. The verdict about its technical feasibility was delivered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The business strategy of Genan, Europe's largest mechanical tyre recycler, has been impacted by rising energy costs. As a result, Genan has separated energy charges from its process list and will display a quarterly updated energy price scale alongside the materials cost. According to Genan’s CEO Poul Steen Rasmussen, energy prices have been increasing for quite some time, and Genan has been absorbing these significant extra expenditures through 2021. The company says it cannot, however, continue along this path. The Circular Economy requires energy in order to transform end-of-life items into fresh recycled raw materials, and the recycling industry alone cannot meet this demand. Rasmussen says by 2022, Genan will have to enact a portion of this bill as a variable energy surcharge.

Lina Goodman, CEO of Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA), expresses frustration over the lack of progress in tyre recycling initiatives. Despite efforts to get industry associations, retailers, and auto brands on board, there's still resistance, and the recycling rate for used car, bus, and truck tyres has dropped from 90% in 2019-20 to 80% in the past year. TSA faces challenges with freeloaders and illegal dumping, impacting legitimate recyclers. Goodman emphasizes the need for regulatory support to address these issues, urging all tyre importers to contribute to a recycling scheme and preventing businesses from engaging with rogue operators.
