Demand for finished rCB is growing across rubber, plastics and inks and coatings, and Waverly Carbon is keen to bring on new suppliers to increase output. It is essential that suppliers meet its specification requirements for clean and consistent pyrolysis char. Material must be low volatile, steel free and with stable ash content. The parties plan to complete the DFS by the end of June 2021 and anticipate the project being financed before the end of 2021, with construction taking place in 2022 and operations starting in 2023. It’s envisioned that with Klean’s intellectual property and know-how for the processing of scrap tires and its ability to apply its proven portfolio of IP on a global basis, starting with an operating tire recycling facility in Greece will shorten the project development cycle. This project is expected to transform end-of-life tires into high quality, valuable raw materials primarily a high grade recovered carbon black (“rCB”) and recovered fuel oil or what is known as pyrolysis oil akin to an MDO oil. This plant will be fully integrated with Klean’s proprietary tire char upgrading system that enables the economic conversion of low-value tire char into high-value carbon black replacements which can replace virgin Carbon Black by volumes of 10% up to 100% depending on the specific application. Klean estimates that the carbon emission offsets from the Pyrolysis Hellas facility will be in excess of 100,000 metric tons annually.

LD Carbon, a waste treatment and raw material recycling company from South Korea, announced on August 16th that it had succeeded in attracting 15 million USD of “Series A” investment. In this “Series A” of LD Carbon, Value System Asset Management participated as an anchor investor, and four investment institutions, including Korea Investment & Securities Co., Pentastone Investment & Elohim Partners, participated.

In his latest article, Martin von Wolfersdorf – a renown carbon black expert from Berlin – discusses the challenges faced by the recovered carbon black industry, particularly in terms of securing industry support and investment. Von Wolfersdorf notes that while the tire industry has made clear demands for tire sustainability, there could be more investment from tire and carbon black corporations to support the growth of the industry. Martin von Wolfersdorf also highlights the financial challenges faced by start-ups in the recovered carbon black industry, particularly those without an industrial operation. These companies often have more cash-burn than cash-flow, as planning and developing can be costly activities. Even pre-engineering studies required for permits can cost up to €1M. The article emphasizes that these start-ups need more equity investment to sustain their operations.

Robert Weibold GmbH is working with a Southern European End-of-Life Tire (ELT) pyrolysis operator to find a suitable off-taker for their raw rCB. The pyrolysis operator employs proprietary continuous technology/process, and their process is accredited/certified by prestigious certification bodies. Currently, they produce nominal amounts of raw rCB, and the product specifications are as follows,

CSRC group's board has approved a partnership with Eco Infinic Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of SHEICO group, to invest in the recovered carbon black (rCB) business at the former site of Continental Carbon Company (CCC) Phenix plant. This joint venture aims to develop the North American market for recovered carbon black and commence production in 2026. According to CSRC, the new plant will be one of the largest in North America, with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons of rCB, 35,000 tons of tire pyrolysis oil (TPO), and 2,300 tons of steel wire. The joint venture will be 65% owned by Eco Infinic, with CSRC and CCC jointly holding 35%. Specifically, the capital contributions to the joint venture are as follows: CSRC will contribute USD 12,500,000 in cash for 21% of the shares; CCC will contribute assets worth USD 8,500,000 for 14% of the shares; and Eco Infinic will contribute USD 39,000,000 in cash for 65% of the shares.

The high participation shows that the tire pyrolysis industry is concerned about the value of their products and may be moving towards investment into rCB refinement technology. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from the session attests to the fact that operators are looking for ways to refine carbon fraction of their pyrolysis operation in order to reach broader markets and achieve higher prices.
