EFG Polymers, a resource recovery company based in Arizona, United States, announced this December an initiative to redefine what constitutes “end-of-life” (EOL) for tires and what constitutes rubber waste. The materials incorporated in tires when removed from service retain almost all of the properties existing when the tires were manufactured, indeed it is the retention of these properties of indestructibility that create the resource recovery challenge. The current EOL processes almost universally destroy those valuable properties rather than recover the resources. EFG technologies engineer new elastomeric materials with high value applications and dramatically extend the life of the resources while eliminating waste.

ACI’s 8th World Elastomer Summit will be taking place in Lyon, France on the 1st-2nd March 2023. The two day event will bring together the senior executives from petrochemical companies, elastomers & rubbers producers, end-products manufacturers, technology providers, chemical intermediate suppliers, researchers, as well as other influential stakeholders from the value chain. Waste elastomers and End-of-Life tyres do not degrade and remain in the environment for a long time. Therefore, it is imperative to be able to re-use and recycle elastomers to avoid the negative effects to the environment. Additionally, the increase in elastomer production, applications and use also increases polymeric waste, and new, suitable and efficient processes are required to enable simple and sustainable recycling.

Circtec Ltd, one of the global leaders in end-of-life tyre chemical recycling through pyrolysis technology has acquired Granuband B.V., a leading Netherlands end-of-life tyre collection and recycling company. With a substantial recycling plant in the industrial port of Amsterdam, capable of processing 50,000 tonnes per year of end-of-life tyres into granulate, moulded products and tyre chips, Granuband is one of the main end-of-life tyre recycling companies in the Benelux region.

Recently, a joint venture was formed by Pyrolyx AG from Munich, Germany and Reklaim, Inc. based in Seattle, USA. New JV is going to focus at the tire-derived carbon black recovery and will operate in North America. German Pyrolyx AG owns 81% of Pyrolyx USA, Inc. At new facilities throughout North America, the JV will use manufacturing process from the German parent company. Moreover, Pyrolyx USA will be run by German top management. Location of facilities and the volume of investment are not disclosed yet. The company will recover carbon black (rCB) from end-of-life tires and rubber. Reportedly, the company is going to suggest a sustainable and cost-effective substitute to original carbon black which will be well-suited for numerous rubber and plastics applications, including even tire compounders. Three days later from the JV announcement, European Rubber Journal reported that Thorsten Gohlke, The chairman of Pyrolyx AG‘s supervisory board, was going to step down at the next annual general meeting of the company for personal reasons. The date for the next annual general meeting has not yet been given, but the last meeting was held in August 2016.

Tire producer Continental A.G will start applying recovered carbon black (rCB) obtained via tire pyrolysis method and produced by German Pyrolyx A.G. after two companies have reached a five-year deal. According to the contract, Pyrolyx will be supplying some 10,000 metric tons of rCB annually to Continental’s facilities in numerous countries. This will help Pyrolyx to increase its sales and grow in North America and eastern Europe as additional plants will be commissioned as part of the agreement.

Pyrolyx is a company specializing in recovered carbon black, tire-derived oil and steel production – these are the byproducts of scrap tire pyrolysis that are considered valuable for industrial use. For instance, recovered carbon black can be used in manufacturing of new tires and as colorant in synthetic rubber production.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) has formally submitted an environmental permit application for the recycling plant that the company intends to establish in Uddevalla, Sweden. The application pertained to the establishment of a tire pyrolysis plant on an industrial site in the Lillesjö district of Uddevalla Municipality. The facility would have an initial annual capacity of 30,000 tons of end-of-life tires but the long-term plan for the facility is to process up to 60,000 tons per year. Enviro expects the application process to take up to one year.

Environmentalists have criticized Osnabrück's plans for a city pyrolysis plant. The tire pyrolysis facility would assist the city in removing old tires while also producing energy and raw materials for resale. However, the plans for the Pieswerk project are being challenged by a ProPye group.

On May 13, Pyrum Innovations – a German end-of-life tire pyrolysis operator – announced it had received ISO 9001 certification for its quality management in the scope of end-of-life tire recycling, production and sales of the resulting products (tire pyrolysis oil and recovered carbon black), research and development of new input materials and products, and plant design and construction. The implementation of and compliance with the quality management system according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 has been confirmed by successfully passing, Pyrum said.
