Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) has received an order for pyrolysis oil, the total value of which Enviro estimates to be approximately MSEK 4.7 (USD 450,000). Behind the order is the subsidiary of a leading US oil company that submitted an initial order for oil in February of 2022 for production tests. Delivery of the order is expected over a period of about one year beginning in March 2023 and follows on from successful production testing by the customer that Enviro previously announced.

The parties plan to complete the DFS by the end of June 2021 and anticipate the project being financed before the end of 2021, with construction taking place in 2022 and operations starting in 2023. It’s envisioned that with Klean’s intellectual property and know-how for the processing of scrap tires and its ability to apply its proven portfolio of IP on a global basis, starting with an operating tire recycling facility in Greece will shorten the project development cycle. This project is expected to transform end-of-life tires into high quality, valuable raw materials primarily a high grade recovered carbon black (“rCB”) and recovered fuel oil or what is known as pyrolysis oil akin to an MDO oil. This plant will be fully integrated with Klean’s proprietary tire char upgrading system that enables the economic conversion of low-value tire char into high-value carbon black replacements which can replace virgin Carbon Black by volumes of 10% up to 100% depending on the specific application. Klean estimates that the carbon emission offsets from the Pyrolysis Hellas facility will be in excess of 100,000 metric tons annually.

On April 15, SK Energy and SK Networks announced that they will collaborate with Daeho Industries, Korea's leading retread tyre manufacturer, to develop a low-carbon circular system that utilizes scrap tyres. According to the agreement, the three parties will analyze the viability of the pyrolysis process that produces recovered carbon black and pyrolysis oil, as well as the measures to strengthen the collection and delivery system of waste tyres in South Korea.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (publ) (Enviro) has received a recovered tire pyrolysis oil order worth MSEK 2 from Swedish fuel company Preem. The oil will be delivered in the first quarter 2023 and used by Preem for production tests. The fuel company Preem will use the delivered oil as a raw material for production tests to determine how suitable it is for the production of different biofuels. These tests will take place at Preem’s refinery in Lysekil, which has already been granted a permit to conduct production tests of tire pyrolysis oil.

The German engineering and trading company Waste Desorp GmbH of Bad-Malente and the Polish MetalERG sp.z.o.o spk of Olawa have entered into a cooperation for the joint production of compete turnkey pyrolysis systems. This laid the foundations for the establishment of the first European company for the supply of complete pyrolysis systems, which, according to Waste Desorp GmbH, guarantees the customers high quality production standards and compliance with local environmental protection measures. The company's services range from customer advice, the layout and design of the systems to the construction and delivery of the complete pyrolysis plants, including assembly, training, service and spare parts supply.

In a relatively short period of time, pyrolysis has evolved from having “a very bad reputation” to becoming “a real solution” for end-of-life tyres (ELTs) through its increasingly sophisticated delivery of a range of highly sustainable raw materials, declared Robert Weibold in his opening remarks to the BIR Tyres & Rubber Committee session in Copenhagen on May 28. Figures provided by the Managing Director of Austria-based tyre recycling and pyrolysis consultancy Robert Weibold GmbH indicated that annual global production of tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO), untreated char, and milled and pelletized recovered carbon black (rCB) currently amounted to, respectively, 1.7 million tons, 1.2 million tons and 180,000 tons from a tyre feedstock of 4.5 million tons.

According to the latest press release by Audi Hungaria Zrt., as a result of the company’s collaboration with New Energy Kft., from now on, tire waste generated at the site of Audi Hungaria in Győr will be chemically recycled, thereby avoiding the release of microplastics and the hazardous substances that leach from them into the environment during recovery. The process used for this is pyrolysis, in which tire waste is chemically converted into oil. The oil produced is used by petrochemical companies to produce new plastics, while the resulting recovered carbon black (rCB) is utilized in tire production. The gases produced during pyrolysis are used to generate the high temperatures needed for the process.

A German recycler Stadtwerke Osnabrück has revealed plans to construct a tire pyrolysis plant that will consider sustainability principles and process 100 percent of scrap tires in the Germany city of Osnabrück. The plant will be given a name of Pieswerk, and it will rely on a special thermo-chemical process of pyrolysis during recycling. This will help to recover raw materials from scrap tires. The Stadtwerke supervisory board has already given the "green light" to pursue the Pieswerk plans. Stadtwerke CEO Christoph Hüls stressed that the project is still undergoing early stages but his company wanted to make the information public in order to be transparent. He also emphasized that pyrolysis is not well-known among the public but this process “has proven itself many times and that many will certainly also use at home – for self-cleaning of the oven."

Argus Media recently reported that Spanish trading company Nexolub has signed a 10-year offtake deal with a tire pyrolysis company Life for Tyres (L4T) to market advanced pyrolysis oil from a new plant in Puertollano. The project is expected to be completed in December and, reportedly, will become one of the biggest of its type in Europe. According to the press release by Argus Media, L4T says the €30 million plant will begin production of 10,000 tons per year of pyrolysis oil, made from recycled end-of-life tires, in the first quarter of 2022. The recovered oils can be used as an advanced biofuels feedstock under annex IX of the EU's recast Renewable Energy Directive (Red II).
