Recently, New Zealand’s Tyrewise released Milestone 2 report, which details its operational results from January to March 2025. Mark Gilbert, Chair of Auto Stewardship New Zealand said Tyrewise is on route to meeting its targets and contributing to sustainable tyre management. Tyrewise is showing strong operational results, ongoing improvements to systems, and is engaged in developing strategies to address gaps in infrastructure and market demand for tyre derived products and fuel.

New Zealand prepares to implement the Tyrewise stewardship scheme on September 1, 2024. Tyrewise is New Zealand's first nationwide scheme for end-of-life tyres (ELTs). It establishes a structured process for collecting, transporting, and recycling ELTs, diverting them from landfills and repurposing them into valuable resources. This initiative addresses long-standing environmental challenges posed by discarded tyres and sets a precedent for similar schemes globally.

Scrap tires go through numerous recycling processes before they become new tires. A distinction is made between material recycling (sorting, separating and granulating), raw material recycling (e.g., pyrolysis process) and chemical recycling as the final finishing step of pyrolysis worldwide. Pyrum Innovations AG ("Pyrum"), a pioneer in the sustainable recycling of end-of-life tyres (ELT) based on its patented pyrolysis technology, has further expanded its cooperation network. In a pilot project with the BMW Group, Pyrum has recently began recycling the used tyres of the BMW Group branch in Saarland. The pilot project was preceded by an audit in which topics such as occupational safety and fire protection, permits and environmental requirements were examined. The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) reported in January 2021 about putting tire manufacturers on notice that California wants them to explore alternatives to using zinc, a toxic chemical that harms aquatic life and burdens waterways. Zinc helps make rubber stronger, but also wears off tire tread and washes into storm drains, streams, rivers and lakes, threatening California fish and other aquatic organisms. DTSC, the State’s department missioned to work toward safer California households, workplaces, and products, intends to use its innovative Safer Consumer Products (SCP) program to work with tire manufactirers to look for an alternative to this harmful chemical. The SCP program seeks to remove toxic chemicals from products before they’re sold to consumers. This is more efficient and effective than issuing bans later, and, in this case, helps stormwater agencies cost-effectively meet state and federal water-quality requirements.

According to Global Rubber Markets, an online magazine devoted to virgin and recycled rubber, a tire processing plant is expected to be constructed in Scotland. The project, reportedly, is the first of its kind in the UK, and it is expected to solve Scotland’s end-of-life tire problem and create over 100 jobs for the local area. A notice of pre-application has been submitted to Renfrewshire council, informing planners of the intent to build a ground-breaking tire processing plant in Linwood (Renfrewshire), Scotland.

Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum), a pioneer in the sustainable recycling of end-of-life tires based on its patented, unique pyrolysis technology, announces the first delivery of recovered carbon black (rCB) to Ralf Bohle GmbH with its Schwalbe brand. The rCB is obtained from used bicycle tires that Schwalbe collects from specialist dealers throughout Germany with its "Schwalbe Recycling System". Subsequently, Pyrum with its pyrolysis plant in Dillingen takes over the mechanical processing as well as the pyrolytic recycling of the used tires. Thus, Schwalbe is now starting production of the first bicycle tire to use rCB completely. The tire is to be presented in June 2023 at the world's largest bicycle trade fair Eurobike in Frankfurt and will then be available in stores.
