An audit performed by Utah’s Office of the Legislative Auditor General reveals that Utah’s waste tire program needs improvement in waste tire fund utilization, tracking, outreach and oversight. The Utah waste tire program was founded by the Utah legislature in 1990 and is funded by a fee of $1 levied on consumers on every new tire purchased in the state.

An award-winning innovation method for tire recycling is crumb rubber devulcanization. The original process was developed by a scholar whose innovation was commercialized by Tyromer Inc. – the Canadian company founded by a national university. What makes devulcanization stand out is the fact that it does not require the application of any chemical solvents. Moreover, Tyromer’s process helps reuse waste tire rubber in new tires and in retreads – this was hardly possible before.

According to Estonian source ERR News, Swedish waste disposal company Ragn-Sells AS intends to establish a tire-shredding plant, likely in Lääne-Viru County, to recycle end-of-life rubber into oils for Enefit Power plants. This move aims to alleviate a major tire dump near Tartu. Pyrolysis process is used to transform end-of-life tires into a usable raw material. Tire importers meanwhile have set up a new producer responsibility organization, which would collect end-of-life tires due to be shredded, as they say they are not satisfied with the Rehviringlus, the organization currently tasked with recycling tires.

On October 21, Bridgestone held a groundbreaking ceremony on October 21 for its new pilot demonstration plant for precise pyrolysis*1of end-of-life tires at its plant in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The ceremony brought together 32 participants, such as Seki City Mayor Kiyoshi Yamashita and representatives from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, as well as other stakeholders, who gathered to pray for the safety of the construction of the new plant.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Bernard Davis, announced the awarding of a new contract to Halifax C&D Recycling that will provide an in-province recycling solution for used tires in Newfoundland and Labrador. He was joined by Derm Flynn, Chair, Multi-Materials Stewardship Board and Bev Connell, Director of C&D Material Operations, Halifax C&D Recycling to mark this new milestone for the province.
