Novel asphalt additive for better, safer and environment-friendly roads has been developed by an EU-funded project Silent Rubber Pavements. The pavement industry faces different challenges in realizing more silent and eco-friendly pavements that need less maintenance. Crumb rubber, a granulated material obtained from scrap tires or other rubber goods, is a promising solution held back by several barriers.

According to company’s statement, the project, the investment value of which has not been disclosed, will utilize pyrolysis and hydrotreating technologies to convert end-of-life tires into renewable drop-in advanced biofuels that can be used in diesel and petrol and qualify as development fuels under the UK’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RFTO).

Tyre Stewardship Australia – an end-of-life-tire management authority in Australia – reports that it partnered with Puma Bitumen for crumb rubber ‘game changer’ for Australian roads sector. The equivalent of more than a million used car iyres can now be recycled to make high quality crumb rubber bitumen for Australian roads in a ‘game changing’ partnership between Puma Bitumen and Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA). Through two significant equipment investments – partly funded by TSA – Puma Bitumen has dramatically expanded its manufacturing capacity and widened the range of crumb rubber technology for both sprayed seals and asphalt currently available in Australia.

Tyrecycle – an Australian end-of-life tyre recycling company – moves to expand its operations in Sydney with a new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant. Australian e-magazine Waste Management Review reports that Australia’s leading tyre recycler, Tyrecycle is gearing up for a purpose-built multi-million dollar rubber crumb manufacturing plant in Sydney, following significant growth in the uptake of its products produced from end-of-life tyres. Tyrecycle Chief Executive Officer Jim Fairweather says the move is to cater for strong demand over the past two years, with the company experiencing a 30 per cent growth in sales of rubber crumb.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) – a Swedish tire pyrolysis equipment designer and operator – and a global tire manufacturer Michelin have signed three definitive agreements that form the basis of the companies’ strategic partnership. The agreements regulate the terms for a jointly owned plant for the end-of-life tire pyrolysis in Chile, the terms and conditions for Michelin’s use of Enviro’s patented technology, and payment for this, and the terms and conditions for payment to Enviro for deliveries of technology and services to the jointly owned plant in Chile. Before the agreements can enter into force, they must be approved by Enviro’s owners at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM). Notice of the EGM will be published separately.

International Mining (IM) magazine reports that MMG’s Dugald River underground zinc mine Cloncurry in Queensland, Australia is tackling how to recycle end-of-life tires. According to the magazine, the mine annually generates about 920 end-f-life tires from technical vehicles and trucks. The Council of Australian Governments decided to ban used and end-of-life tire exports from December 2021, and the country is now facing a growing tire stockpile problem. According to IM, Dugald River and its mining contractor Barminco have investigated alternative tire disposal, supporting a joint venture – REVYRE – program with Energy Estate and InfraCo. Reportedly, a proposed recycling process breaks down and repurposes end-of-life tires into a high value polymer product fit for tire manufacturing and clean high tensile scrap steel. REVYRE is a low emission rubber polymer recovery and re-processing business for end-of-life rubber products including end-of-life tires, conveyor belts and like products. It utilizes award winning, recently commercialized technologies in its two-step recycling process and is the only available genuine industry solution for the re-use of rubber in the circular economy.

In Kuwait, the Salmi tire stockpile is referred to as a constant source of fires and air pollution. As part of efforts to reduce and promote the end-of-life tire recycling in Kuwait, the Green Rubber Recycling company, which was established in 2013, creates a variety of products which utilize recycled tire rubber. Kuwait Times recently published an article about the Green Rubber Recycling highlighting company’s achievements. “Located in Amghara area, about 30 kilometers from Kuwait City, the tire recycling factory makes 100% recycled rubber tiling in brick or tile format for all types of locations including children’s play places, gyms, sports arenas as well as filling for gardens, farms and elsewhere,” the magazine writes.

Pyrowave, a company that developed a breakthrough technology allowing recycling of plastics through pyrolysis, recently announced the closing of a series B investment. This investment marks the first step towards bringing Pyrowave’s modular technology to market and providing a scalable, viable and sustainable solution in the fight against plastic waste.
