SIBUR, a leading Russian petrochemical company, is advancing its efforts to substitute natural rubber in tires with synthetic alternatives. The company is collaborating with tire manufacturers to finalize tests of experimental tires made using synthetic isoprene rubber, with results expected in 2025.

Promising test results for synthetic rubber

Daria Borisova, SIBUR's Managing Director for Development and Innovation, shared that around 300 prototype tires are undergoing rigorous testing, including bench and durability assessments. Preliminary results indicate that the synthetic rubber tires demonstrate performance comparable to standard models. The initiative covers a full range of tires for both passenger and commercial vehicles.

Development of specialized formulations

SIBUR is also working on advanced rubber formulations tailored to different tire components, such as sidewalls and treads. Approximately 20 formulations have been developed and tested to ensure they meet specific functional and physical requirements. The company’s pilot batches of rubber are currently being homologated with its partners.

Reducing dependence on natural rubber imports

Natural rubber, which accounts for about 25% of tire production materials, is predominantly sourced from the Asia-Pacific region. SIBUR’s initiative aims to replace up to 80% of these imports with synthetic alternatives, significantly reducing reliance on natural rubber. The project represents a major step forward in innovation and sustainability for the tire industry.
