News: Tire Recycling & Pyrolysis

The International Elastomer Conference (IEC) is the one place, one time a year, where attendees from tire manufacturing and tire recycling industries find the best of the industry all under one roof. It is an event where connections are made, knowledge is shared, new products, new technology and new ideas are introduced, business is conducted, developed and gained, fun is had, encouragement and empowerment happen, and the future is embraced.

A team of engineers from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University in Australia have managed to replace 100% of conventional aggregates in concrete – such as gravel and crushed rock – with rubber from discarded tires that meets building codes, promising a boost for the circular economy.

Recent dismissal of PM Narciso's appeal of the Madrid Superior Court of Justice's decision by the Supreme Court of Spain (TSJM). This confirmed the ruling of the Investigating Court No. 5 of Majadahonda, which had sentenced him to three years and eight months in prison in 2020 for committing an environmental offense by assembling approximately 8,000 tires on a plot of land inside an industrial park in Majadahonda.

One of the oldest tire recycling plants in the UK is located at Ranskill, Nottinghamshire, where firefighters from that county have been battling a large outbreak. The yard of Boynton Brothers in Ranskill, close to Retford, is where the fire is thought to have started.

The Ministry of the Environment of Bogotá organized again a series of sessions called “Llantatón”, between August 11 and 25, to collect end-of-life tires in the towns of Barrios Unidos, Usme, Kennedy and Usaquén, points in the that tires that have finished their useful life will be collected from motorcycles, bicycles and vehicles whose rim is up to 22.5.

Chile's Ministry of Environment published the first decree linked to Law 20,920 in January 2021, which states that by 2030, all tires on mining trucks with 45-inch or larger tires must be recycled 100 percent. The gradual implementation of tire recycling in mining must start in 2023.

In its latest press release, Spanish EPR agency TNU (Tratamiento Neumáticos Usados) explains that all the waste generated by a tire after its use, rubber, steel and fabric, are a rich source of material and energy resources since they can be reused. Currently, the depletion of natural raw materials and fossil fuels is forcing us to seek more sustainable solutions, and in this sense, the recycling of end-of-life tires has important advantages. There are numerous ways of recovering and transforming its components into innovative and sustainable uses, allowing to reduce the environmental impact, as is the case with these useful and safe brake pads for trucks.

According to News & Star magazine, members of the public have spoken with developers about the possibility of submitting a planning request for two pyrolysis facilities north of Carlisle, UK. In July, members of the public and the Rockcliffe parish council examined the public consolation for a "sustainable eco-project" of two facilities proposed for the Rockcliffe Northwest Recycling Centre – one for plastics and one for tires.

Bolder Industries, Inc., the circular solutions provider for rubber, plastics, and petrochemical supply chains, and Liberty Tire, the largest tire collector and recycler in the U.S., U.S.-owned by ECP, a leading energy transition investor, completed a formal agreement outlining their North American partnership.
