Austria generates around 70,000 tonnes of end-of-life tires each year. Approximately half of this volume is now materially recovered. A central role in this effort is played by KIAS Recycling GmbH in Ohlsdorf, Upper Austria, which operates the country’s only facility dedicated to material tire recycling. As a partner in the AZuR-netzwerk, KIAS processes up to 30,000 tonnes of used tires annually from both Austria and neighboring regions.

The facility follows a structured recycling process, beginning with the inspection, sorting, and mechanical shredding of tires. Key components — rubber, steel, and textile fibers—are effectively separated. The resulting rubber granulate is a high-quality secondary raw material used in applications such as playground surfacing, safety mats, footwear, and construction.

This approach keeps valuable materials within the loop, significantly reduces energy demand, and helps to avoid CO₂ emissions. Material recovery at KIAS takes place without thermal treatment and with minimal environmental impact, offering a clear advantage over conventional incineration methods.
