Benji and Co, along with its Director Peter Rees, has been fined a total of £69,000 following serious breaches of environmental regulations related to tyre waste storage and disposal across several sites in mid Wales. The case was heard at Welshpool Magistrates’ Court on 14 October 2025.

According to letsrecycle.com, between January and June 2022, the company unlawfully stored and treated large quantities of end-of-life tyres at a site in Llanidloes without the required environmental permit. Inspections by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) revealed more than 200 tyre bales, 1,000 loose tyres, and 40 tonnes of shredded waste stored in unsafe conditions, posing a significant fire risk. Despite repeated warnings from NRW since 2018, the company failed to comply with regulations.

Further investigations uncovered that Benji and Co had also transported and deposited tyre waste at multiple unregulated locations across Powys between March and December 2022. NRW described the actions as “serious non-compliance,” emphasizing the threat such illegal storage poses to both communities and the environment.

The court imposed fines of £40,000 on the company, £15,000 in prosecution costs, and a £2,000 victim surcharge. Director Peter Rees was personally fined £10,000 and ordered to pay an additional £2,000 surcharge. NRW said the prosecution demonstrates its determination to tackle waste crime and ensure accountability within the tyre recycling sector.
