A Swedish tire pyrolysis equipment manufacturer and operator Scandinavian Enviro Systems and the French global tire manufacturer Michelin, have extended the letter of intent regarding a strategic partnership which was announced in April 2020. Initially the parties expected that a final agreement would have been reached by mid-year 2020, but the negotiations have been somewhat delayed, partly due to the ongoing pandemic. Therefore, Enviro and Michelin are prolonging the letter of intent until the end of October this year where both companies assess that they will be able to provide more details at the latest. Simultaneously the exclusivity agreement is also prolonged until October 31 this year.

This investment marks the first step towards bringing Pyrowave’s modular technology to market and providing a scalable, viable and sustainable solution in the fight against plastic waste.

Swedish tire pyrolysis operator and equipment manufacturer Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) reports about a long-term strategic partnership with the French global tire manufacturer Michelin which resolved to conduct a private placement of approximately SEK 32.5 million (EUR 2.97 million), by which Michelin, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Michelin Ventures SAS, will subscribe for shares in Enviro corresponding to holdings of 20% after the issue. The strategic partnership is intended to include, among other things, the establishment of a jointly owned recycling plant for end-of-life tires and joint development work to expand the possibilities for the materials that are recycled using Enviro’s technology.

In the end of this article we make an estimation of a possible annual market size of recovered carbon black, modestly assuming virgin carbon black substitution rate at 20%. Recently, an expert in tire-derived carbon black Martin von Wolfersdorff shared his views on the prospects recovered carbon black (rCB) in tire-to-tire recycling. In his press release Mr. von Wolfersdorff said he appreciated it when tier one carbon black companies spoke about rCB. The expert says top carbon black producers attend rCB workshops, presentations or conferences organized by Wolfersdorff Consulting, and there are ample opportunities for collaboration between the rCB and the CB industry, some of which have been highlighted in his Carbon Black World 2018 presentation in Düsseldorf (see image below). Spain has taken a step to get rid of scrap tires from beaches as part of the Libera Project. The measure united well-known brands and corporations such as Pirelli Tires, Michelin, Goodyear and others; they joined Signus – Spanish scrap tire management authority – and the Network of Marine Rangers to advance the program labeled “1 Square Metre by Nature”. All parties involved in the initiative sought an aim to effectively remove and manage waste tires so they could be reused.

After almost two years since the automotive giant Michelin has acquired Lehigh, a company specializing in recycled tire-derived micronized rubber powder (MRP) production, the majority of the its customers are still happy with the service, Kedar Murthy, vice president of Lehigh, said while giving a speech at the Tire Technology Expo 2019 last month. Following the acquisition, Lehigh preserved its name and it managed to keep trust of its customers, says Murthy.
