The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) announced its new Board of Directors following its Annual General Meeting of members held on June 14, 2023. At that meeting, the members elected Lawrence Kumar of Yokohama Tire (Canada) as a new Director. Based in Langley, B.C., Mr. Kumar has over two decades of experience in the tire industry and is currently the Controller at Yokohama Tire (Canada). “We welcome Lawrence to the TRAC Board. His business experience and knowledge are sure to be of great value to TRAC in the coming years,” says Paul Downey, President and CEO of Pliteq, and TRAC Chair of the Board.

The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) announced that its preeminent biennial Rubber Recycling Symposium will take place October 4-5 at the Lord Nelson Hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Tire and Rubber Association of Canada with the Symposium’s Host Sponsor Divert NS, and partner U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association cordially invite professionals and companies involved in tire manufacturing, rubber recycling, manufacturing of products from recycled rubber, end-of-life tire stewardship organizations, governments, and equipment manufacturers to participate in what had become one of the largest events of its kind.

On March 2, the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC; www.tracanada.ca) announced that the nominations for its 2023 Industry Leadership Awards are now open. The nominations are open until April 21, 2023, in four categories: Leader of the Year, Young Leader, Lifetime Achievement, and Sustainability. Anyone can nominate a deserving individual or organization (self-nominations are no longer accepted). Corporate nominees must have a physical presence, e.g., office or facility, in Canada. Nominated individuals can be domiciled anywhere. The awards ceremony will take place in conjunction with TRAC’s Annual General Meeting of Members on June 14, 2023.

Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) announces the addition of Tyromer Inc. as a new member. Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Tyromer’s proprietary rubber devulcanization technology converts scrap tire rubber crumb into TDP (Tire-Derived Polymer) that has a broad applicability and can be incorporated into most new rubber products including tires, retreads, conveyor belts, and general rubber goods. “Tyromer and its technology have been on TRAC’s radar since the early stages of the organization’s efforts for commercialization, and we knew it was only a matter of time before TRAC would be able to welcome this company with its unique Canadian technology to TRAC ranks,” says Carol Hochu, President and CEO of TRAC. “Tyromer is a pioneer in the field of rubber devulcanization, and we look forward to a cooperative and lasting relationship that will be mutually beneficial.”

In December 2022, the Government of Ontario filed amendments to the Tires Regulation under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016. Tire and Rubber Association of Canada welcomes these amendments that will bring great benefit to Ontarians through the reduction of red tape for business and industry, creating a more efficient tire recycling system. The new regulatory amendments refine requirements for tire recycling promotion and education, supply data reporting, and management performance audits for the industry. Other changes include updating the producer responsibility hierarchy to require more businesses participate in tire recycling, expanding on-demand used tire collection services across the province, increasing the range of resource recovery activities so more used tires can be recycled, and more.
