e-RubberCon is an international conference organized by the French Association of Rubber and Polymer Engineers (AFICEP) under the auspices of the International Rubber Conference Organization (IRCO) which AFICEP is a member of. As its name suggests, the conference is devoted to problems of rubber industry, including rubber and tire recycling, as this year its main motive is “Environment and Recycling: A Strategic Challenge for Rubber Materials.” This year, Robert Weibold – a tire recycling and pyrolysis expert from Vienna, Austria – speaks at e-RubberCon about “Challenges, trends and opportunities for end-of-life tires from a French perspective”. Devulcanization is a method of potentially “upgrading” end-of-life tire rubber. Devulcanized rubber is a higher valued form of end-of-life rubber, since devulcanized material can be partly revulcanized and partially replace virgin rubber in specific compounds and applications, including tires. Currently, only a small number of devulcanization systems are operating on industrial scale. These are primarily small-capacity systems, which are devulcanizing rubber production rejects (NR, SBR, NBR, EPDM, Butyl, etc.) or rubber recovered from waste tires. The well attended bi-annual Scrap Tire Recycling Conference was held at the Hyatt Regency in Greenville, South Carolina, and was organized by The Scrap Tire Research and Education Foundation (STREF). An a-propos location, since the state hosts the largest tire manufacturing industry and two major automobile assembly plants (BMW and Volvo). Attendance was higher than ever before, attesting to the fact that sustainable rubber manufacturing, tire recycling and pyrolysis are hot topics.

This September, Robert Weibold attended the First International Cooperation Summit on Tire and Rubber Recycling in Kunshan, China, on 16 and 17 September 2019. The event gathered industry participants from all over China, as well as from the European Union, the United States and other countries. Proclaimed by Zhu Jun, the president of China’s Tire Recycling Association (CTRA), the motto of the summit was “Environment first, Resources second; no mercy to polluting technologies”. As he and many other speakers asserted, China had gone a huge transformation in the tire recycling industry over the last 10 years.

Italy-based EcoTyre shared its first results of devlucanization initiative saying that the process gave outstanding results when used on retreaded Hankook tires. Some materials that rely on devulcanized rubber were used in tire retreads; according to EcoTyre, this method brought positive outcomes of the testing and the company now seeks to apply more devulcanized rubber in retreads as well as in new tires.
